In the days leading up to his wedding with Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce was dealing with legal issues, according to TMZ.
Kelce and his Chiefs teammate Patrick Mahomes reportedly are being sued in New York federal court by the shoe company 1587 Sneakers over the naming of their steakhouse 1587 Prime.
The NFL stars argue they don’t have enough ties to New York to be brought into court there, but the shoe company says national advertising campaigns from the players give them the right to do so.
The lawsuit was first opened in September 2025, with the sneaker company claiming it trademarked “1587” before Mahomes and Kelce.
1587 Sneakers first started selling and using 1587 on shoes and markings in April 2023.
The company did not apply for the “1587” trademark, though, until October 2025, according to ESPN.
They claim the number combination is a nod to when Filipino sailors first landed in America.
The Chiefs stars however, who named their steakhouse after their jersey numbers, applied for the “1587 Prime” trademark in 2023.
The two trademarks also run in different categories with Kelce and Mahomes in bar and restaurant, while the shoe companies is in clothing.
“I think it’s a tough case for the sneaker company,” trademark attorney Josh Gerben told ESPN. “Trademarks can coexist in different industries. … Given that the marks are essentially identical here, is a restaurant and a shoe company too close? Are consumers likely to be confused in thinking they are affiliated with one another?”
1587 Sneakers is also claiming a trademark infringement because the steakhouse sells merch as well as food.
They allege that “scores of consumers” have contacted the sneaker company believing they are in connection to 1587 Prime.
Kelce is in the midst of a busy summer, recently signing a one-year, $12 million contract with the Chiefs, and marrying Swift.
The wedding, which took place on July 3, took place at Madison Suare Garden and featured a multitude of NFL stars such as Mahomes and Tom Brady.
