A Serie A soccer star is in intensive care on Monday after nearly drowning in a pool in Sardinia.

Cagliari’s Yael Trepy lost consciousness in a pool and was then airlifted after the incident at a villa, per Sardinian newspaper Unione Sarda.

The 20-year-old Frenchman is being treated at Santissima Annuziata Civil Hospital in Sassari, Cagliari said in a statement Monday.

“The Club remains in constant contact with the medical staff and with the player’s family, and is closely monitoring the development of his condition,” the statement read. “At this time, everyone at Cagliari Calcio is thinking of Yael and his family.

“The Club also asks that their privacy be fully respected and will provide further updates when available.”

Trepy was having some downtime after earning a Coppa Italia win over Arezzo, 1-0, on Friday, in which he played 54 minutes. Following the win, Cagliari had the weekend off.

La Repubblica reported that Trepy is not a strong swimmer and found his way to the deep end of the swimming pool.

Trepy, born in France, started his career with Parisian club US Creteil-Lusitanos before he left for Cagliari’s academy in 2022.

Once there, he scored against AC Milan’s starlets to win the equivalent of the FA Youth Cup in 2025.

Last season, he scored once across eight Serie A appearances.
