When the Yankees clinch a playoff spot in a day or two or three at the most, I hope they don’t acknowledge the semi-occasion. The playoffs are only par for them.

I mean, aren’t we past these champagne-soaked soirees for doing something we knew they were going to accomplish since Opening Day?

After the Yankees clinched the Subway Series win Sunday at the Stadium, beating the second-division Mets 2-0 thanks to Cy Young favorite and sudden MVP candidate (at least according to manager Aaron Boone) Cam Schlittler, their magic number is down to one.

But I say there’s nothing particularly magical about the 27-time world champions making it into the October dance for the ninth year out of 10. We should be past raising a glass to a wild card now. That doesn’t even deserve a can of beer, much less a case of Dom.
