Cowboys’ Jerry Jones believes Tony Romo can ‘work through’ OWI arrest

CBS may not stand behind Tony Romo. But his former boss does.

Romo, whose status as CBS’ lead NFL analyst is now in jeopardy after he was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence and placed on leave by the network on July 31, still has the support of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who said he has spoken with his former quarterback since the incident in Wisconsin.

Romo spent his entire career (2003-16) in Dallas, before joining CBS in 2017.

“I love him,” Jones said in an interview with KDFW Fox 4. “I love what he’s about. I love his character. I love his love of sport. And he’s a very, very unique talent. And the real question is – and I don’t even have to ask what the answer is: Do you think Tony Romo knows how to get up when he gets knocked down? He had a life of that. And absolutely, that’s one of his greatest attributes, is that he can handle adversity.”

“This is something that he will work through,” he added. “Obviously, I’m a big fan of his, big fan of his family, and let me tell you right now, he’s as real as he sounds. He feels every down time, he feels every up time.”

Romo — who still has four years and $72 million remaining on the mammoth contract he signed with CBS in 2020 — is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 21.

He will not appear on the air “until further notice,” according to CBS, which will replace Romo with former Texans star J.J. Watt, alongside Jim Nantz.
