US Navy making changes for next aircraft carrier deployment after USS Abraham Lincoln’s brutal stay

Navy officials have promised to load up on supplies ahead of the next aircraft carrier deployment after sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln complained of grueling conditions and essential shortages during a nearly nine-month mission.

With the USS Theodore Roosevelt set to head out of San Diego for a seven-to-eight month deployment later this month, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Daryl Caudle revealed in a video announcement Tuesday the vessel is “maximizing its loadout of food, retail products, and hygiene items before getting underway.”

Conditions onboard the Lincoln reportedly deteriorated after Iran attacked a Navy base in Bahrain that functioned as a critical supply hub. The ship began a scheduled seven-month deployment in the South China Sea this past November, but was redirected to the Arabian Sea in January, shortly before the start of Operation Epic Fury against Iran.

Family members of some of the Lincoln’s 5,000 sailors and Marines reported in August that the vessel had run out of toiletries like soap, deodorant and toothpaste, while food supplies were also running low.

Rep. Mike Levin (D-Calif.) reported in an X post Aug. 7 that the Lincoln had “[m]oldy showers, broken toilets, no hot water for weeks, meals that came down to half a cup of rice and two tortillas,” and “sailors so worn down that, according to one family member, the ship’s own doctor warned they need to reach port soon or people are going to start losing their minds.”

After reports that some sailors had attempted to jump overboard made national headlines, the Lincoln was relieved by the USS George Washington and is currently en route back to California after a stop in Thailand earlier this month.

Under pressure from lawmakers on Capitol Hill to prevent a repeat of the dire situation, Caudle insisted in Tuesday’s video that the service “is also focused on quality of life.”

“That means new entertainment equipment on the mess decks, more durable fitness equipment, spare cardio machines ready for our placement, and even holiday materials purchased ahead of time.”

He added that the Navy is taking steps to ensure more “reliable, consistent communication throughout the deployment” for sailors to stay in touch with their families.

Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy John Perryman, who joined Caudle in the video, explained that the Navy “is converting available spaces into additional storage, building the ability to remain self-sufficient for longer periods, especially when resupply may be difficult.”

The Roosevelt is expected to eventually head to the Middle East, though the Pentagon does not confirm ship destinations in advance.

Currently, there are two aircraft carrier strike groups in the region, as well as an amphibious ready group of warships tasked with projecting power toward Iran and maintaining a blockade against the Islamic Republic.

Naval assets in the region have also been working to clear up mines in the Strait of Hormuz, and US officials have claimed that they have opened a lane for shipping vessels to use.
