Tonight’s game is the first closeout game for the Brewers. So far, their lone loss of the postseason came in a closeout game. The Rays haven’t faced elimination yet in this postseason, so we aren’t quite sure how they will respond. What is on the line tonight is easy to see: if the Brewers win, they are champions. If the Rays win, they keep their season alive.
In Game 1 of the World Series, the Brewers started the game with a pair of runs and they never looked back. They didn’t really give much room for Tampa to breathe, even if they had to deal with some issues in the later innings (including celebrating the final out of the game and then having it overturned).
Game 2 started as a disaster for the Brewers, with them committing an error. The Rays then scored four runs in the first inning, and then they didn’t score the rest of the game. Unfortunately for Tampa, the Brewers did score. They scored two in the bottom of the first and then a run in three other innings to give themselves a 5-4 victory.
The Rays’ return home went about as badly as possible. They managed just one run in Game 3 while the Brewers erupted for 10, including eight in the fifth inning. Tampa finally got on the board in the ninth, but the game had long been decided.
