WASHINGTON — President Trump crowed Friday that the US will be raking in 50% of the profits from goods passing over the new Gordie Howe Bridge that connects Michigan and Canada, days after he announced massive tariffs on America’s neighbor to the north.
“Canada disinvited the United States of America to the opening of the Gordie Howe Bridge, which is fine, considering they are paying substantial TARIFFS to the United States, but the original Deal on the Bridge, which was terribly negotiated by a previous Administration, no longer stands,” Trump said in a Truth Social post.
“We changed the terms of the Deal so that the United States of America now gets 50% of the Profit.”
The $4.5 billion bridge — named for the Detroit Red Wings legend — will open to traffic on Monday. A brief ceremony was held Friday featuring Windsor, Ontario Mayor Drew Dilkins and other Canadian officials, with no federal or state officers present.
