Terry Rozier asks for judge to amend terms of release in NBA gambling scheme case

News RoomBy News RoomJune 3, 20260 ViewsNo Comments

Terry Rozier’s legal team is asking a federal judge to amend the conditions of his release because it is impacting his NBA career.

The Wednesday filing asked U.S. District Judge LaShann DeArcy Hall of the Eastern District of New York to lift a restriction that banned Rozier from having any contact with the Hornets, which was put in place as part of his pretrial release conditions.

Rozier, 32, is facing charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering, and will be arraigned on additional charges of sports bribery and honest services fraud, related to a sports betting scheme that federal prosecutors allege he was part of.

Jim Trusty, Rozier’s attorney, argued in the filing on Wednesday that the restriction is impacting an arbitration case between the hooper and the Heat over his 2025-26 base salary.

An arbitrator ruled originally in favor of Rozier, but later came to the conclusion that, due to the conditions of his release, he was in breach of his contract.

Trusty also believed it would impact teams from contacting Rozier about playing for them, with NBA free agency set to begin in less than a month.

“With the NBA’s free agency process officially beginning June 30, maintaining the Hornets on the no-contact list would likely prevent him from having any opportunity to play in the NBA,” Trusty wrote, per ESPN. “Under the current ruling of the arbitrator, an inability to play for or against the Charlotte Hornets would constitute a ‘failure to perform services’ by Mr. Rozier and substantially diminish or eliminate any chance of being contracted by an NBA team.”

Rozier was indicted for his role in the alleged scheme, which included pulling himself out of a March 23, 2023, game while he was still playing for the Hornets.

Rozier was traded to the Heat in January 2024 and spent two seasons in South Beach before he was waived in April.
