Democratsâ sweeping midterm victories amounted to a âWatergate-level repudiationâ of the Republican Party, Sen. Ted Cruz said Wednesday, after becoming Texasâ last remaining statewide GOP lawmaker.
â2026 was not simply a blue wave; it was a blue tsunami. It was an ass kicking. It was not simply a bad 2006 midterm election. It was a Watergate-level repudiation,â Cruz wrote in a lengthy X post.Â
The senator, who has previously floated making another run at the White House, argued the disastrous outcome of the election for the GOP must be âreckoned with.â
âWhen all the votes were counted, the problem wasnât turnout. Instead, our voters, Republicans, Libertarians, Independents, showed up and voted, and rejected our candidates, voting Democrat instead,â he continued.
âNowhere are the consequences of this election greater than Texas,â Cruz said of his state, which had long been a GOP stronghold.
Republicans âlost every single statewide electionâ in the Lone Star State, he noted. The defeated include three-term Gov. Greg Abbott and Senate hopeful Ken Paxton.
Cruz argued that âtoo many Republican politicians seem like they didnât understand or they didnât careâ about votersâ top issue, which he said was âcost of livingâ concerns.
âTariffs have made everything too expensive, and the Iran war has dragged on too long,â he said, breaking with President Trump. âIt should have been brief, decisive, and over. It needs to end, and we should never, under any circumstances, give the Ayatollah billions of dollars.â
Cruz warned that with their new political power âDemocrats in Austin and in Washington will overshootâ and may attempt to push a âradical transgender agenda,â new tax and energy policies and âpersecute those they perceive to be enemies, especially Elon Musk.â
He also predicted âopen persecution, and nonstop retaliationâ against President Trump, his family, administration officials and business leaders.
âMake no mistake. Nationally, the radicals are in charge. The communists and the Islamists who have taken over the Democrat Party have now taken over the United States Congress. They will be unleashed,â Cruz warned. âSadly, that means many Americans will be hurt. Texans will be hurt.â
He lamented âTexas will become more like Californiaâ if Democrats in the state succeed in enacting a radical agenda.
The way forward is two-fold, according to the senator.Â
âOne, fight the madness,â he said, pledging to âwork with Democrats when theyâre willing to be reasonable.â
âBut if the newly elected radicals push policies that hurt Texas, raising taxes, destroying jobs, opening the border, releasing violent criminals, threatening our children, undermining our constitutional rights, I will fight with all of my strength to defend Texas and to defend the Constitution,â Cruz vowed.
He also called on the GOP to ârebuildâ and get behind âpolicies that directly benefit the constituents we lost,â namely blue-collar voters, Evangelical Christians, rural Americans, young people and Hispanics.
“We will rebuild as a true blue-collar party, not by embracing socialism, but by being real free-market conservatives,â Cruz said, expressing optimism that âTexas will be red again.âÂ
âWe have not suddenly become a bunch of tofu-eating, gun-banning, tutu-wearing pinko commie liberals. That ainât us. Texas is still Texas,â he said.
