RJ Decker‘s second season ended on a shocking cliffhanger — and now Bevin Bru is addressing the changes of multiple character deaths.
During the Tuesday, October 27, episode of the ABC show, Mel’s (Bru) past investigation into her friend and fellow cop’s death was reexamined by RJ (Scott Speedman). They figured out that the police officer’s wife was the one actually responsible for his death — and that quickly put a target on Mel’s back.
The finale ended with Mel getting a call for her late friend’s wife, who hinted she was planning to hurt Catherine (Adelaide Clemens) and Sofia (Mélodie Rose Romano). RJ Decker ended before Mel — or the audience — saw what happened next to the main characters.
“[The writers] don’t know. They don’t know what will happen next,” Bru, 35, exclusively told Us. “The only thing I will say is because it is ABC, that’s the one thing that lets me sleep at night.”
Bru said she didn’t think the network would allow such a brutal death to take place, adding, “I don’t think they’re gonna kill them. If it was HBO or some other network, I would be like, ‘Oh, this could go really badly.”
The actress would love to see the story line delved into across multiple episodes in season 3.
“What would be fun is having two episodes to explore it [next season]. They get kidnapped or something where it’s still dangerous but they’re safe,” she suggested to Us. “It would be really fun and RJ and Mel having to team up on such a personal mission that the stakes are so high. It would be really fun to watch and to see them navigate that together — as well as independently — dealing with that.”
Based on Carl Hiaasen‘s novel Double Whammy, RJ Decker focuses on a disgraced newspaper photographer and ex-con who starts over as a private investigator. Bru’s character has played a pivotal role since the show premiered earlier this year but there’s still aspects she hopes to explore.
“I want to know who Sofia’s dad is. Who’s the dad? Where did she come from? I think that’s something that could be so fun to play with. That character, that backstory and how does that go over with RJ? Because RJ has kind of become the father figure,” Bru teased. “There would be so so much you can explore with that.”
She continued: “It’s always fun to explore Mel and Catherine too. More of their backstory. There’s just so much. Each character is so well written that you can explore. It was awesome seeing RJ’s dad this season and getting to know a bit of his past and his background. The opportunity to do that for all the characters … you would have such a rich soil to pull from.”
Bru even brainstormed with Us about potential actors who could play Sofia’s dad. She showed support for Us’ idea about Scott Foley appearing on the show to reunite with Speedman after their time on Felicity.
“Maybe he was like a criminal or something,” Bru noted. “My brain goes all over the place with possibilities of who it could be.”
Bru also mentioned Ramón Rodríguez after their time on Will Trent, adding, “There’s just so much potential and opportunity with that role. There’s so much they could do with the show. I love the show so much.”
Looking ahead, Bru expressed hope that season 3 will have more episodes after the show cut its order for season 2 down to seven episodes.
“We were moving fast and we had sometimes six to eight weeks and we were really packing and going,” she noted. “It felt like obviously we want more episodes because we want to be able to tell more of the story. But I do think that having the shorter order, it gave the writers a bit of a challenge to make sure every episode has to count. There’s no room for fluff. So for me, every episode was just elevated.”
She concluded: “They moved fast with the pacing of it. Everything in this season has more action and more stunts because they were like, ‘We got seven episodes, so let’s just make each one as great as we can.’ So I think it elevated all the material and everything that went into the show itself.”
RJ Decker is streaming on Hulu.
