Nobody Wants This star Tovah Feldshuh is weighing in after Adam Brody publicly showed support for Palestine amid the long-running Israel conflict.
“To accuse the Jewish people of genocide is wild,” Feldshuh, 77, recently told The New York Post. “It’s right out of [Adolf] Hitler’s playbook. You take the victim and you make the victim the perpetrator.”
Feldshuh, who plays Brody’s mother on the Netflix series, was asked whether accusations of genocide are worse when they come from Jewish people themselves, to which she replied, “[It] makes a difference to the [Jewish] community.”
The actress claimed the biggest damage comes from people with large platforms, but she didn’t name Brody specifically.
Brody, 46, recently made headlines when he gave his opinion on the ongoing conflict, telling GQ, “I have spoken a lot about it privately. I haven’t spoken much about it publicly. Put me down as thinking it’s a genocide. Put me down as wanting a free Palestine.”
He continued: “It’s awful that it’s taken so much death and misery, but it does feel like it’s reaching a breaking point that it should have a while ago. I’m hopeful that another administration can really do some good and correct some of these policies that are helping that situation be as awful as it is.”
Feldshuh, meanwhile, explained why she has been outspoken about her support for Israel.
“I believe that the perseverance of the existence of the state of Israel is crucial to the well-being of the democratic world and of the free world,” she said. “Of course, Israel needs the United States, [but] the United States needs Israel, believe you me.”
Feldshuh also noted that political disagreements haven’t taken place on set as she has “to switch channels and do my job.”
“My job, as Bina but also as Tovah, is to love the people on set at my place of work, to be kind,” she added.
Feldshuh isn’t the only person from the Nobody Wants This world to address Brody’s recent interview. Cocreator Erin Foster also spoke out on the “complicated” situation in a clip from her upcoming “Not Skinny But Not Fat” episode.
“I think our work environment, our set is very similar to dinner tables around the world where people are having debate and discussion and disagreeing,” Foster, 44, said on the podcast. “While I love Adam, I also disagree with him. And that’s OK.”
The executive producer, who converted to Judaism before marrying music executive Simon Tikhman, reflected on using her outlook to bring Nobody Wants This to life. The show, which just returned for its third season, follows the love story between agnostic Joanne (Kristen Bell) and rabbi Noah (Brody).
“I think that as the creator of the show, all I can say is that I want our Jewish fans to know that I see you and I hear you and I understand how you feel. And the show has always been and always will be a love letter to Judaism,” Foster explained. “That is why I made this show. It’s because of how beautiful of an experience I’ve had becoming Jewish and being a Jewish person, and sitting here right now at this time in the world where there is almost zero positive representation of Jewish people, I think it’s so important to have that.”
She concluded: “That being said, everyone is entitled to a different opinion than me. I can just tell you what I created this show for, what the intention of the show is.”
