Kevin Shippos wants to keep challenging the Chiefs.
The Massapequa head football coach feels it is in the sport’s best interest to keep playing competitive nonconference games like his team’s epic showdown against Garden City, where the Chiefs snapped the Trojans’ nation-leading 68-game win streak in a 21-14 thriller Monday night in front of nearly 6,000 fans who caused bedlam at Hofstra University.
“To me, high school sports is about putting your kids at the highest level,” Shippos said after Masspequa came away with the win in a contest that boiled down to the last 30 seconds.
Though the Chiefs vs. Trojans first meeting was the highest-profile crossover between conferences I and II, the new Section VIII rule change had several of its top Nassau County teams of differing levels mix it up in well-received early season showdowns.
Shippos, whose Chiefs ride a 26-game win streak, felt the same a week before the historic win and emphasized finding more ways to cut down long spells of lopsided wins.
He ultimately wants these crossover games influencing a substantial change in the Long Island public school football playoff system, where the pinnacle is limited to the best Nassau and Suffolk teams playing only each other in the last game of the year — instead of taking on the best of the best across the Empire State.
“I’d like to see it lead to us participating in the state championship one day,” Shippos told The Post on the Tuesday.
“That’s a dream come true for these kids. Who wouldn’t want to play for a state championship?”
