The Mets just hosted the Royals at Citi Field, and on Friday, they welcome the Red Sox to Queens.
Those are their past two World Series opponents. Of course, it’s been 40 years since the Mets won their last championship, beating Boston in an unforgettable series in 1986.
Not surprisingly, the current Mets don’t have a lot of knowledge about that ’86 team — though A.J. Ewing said, “I heard that team was pretty electric. I know they did some great things.”
Any hope of this group coming close to replicating what that historic team accomplished vanished weeks — or months — ago, which leads to the question: When, exactly, are the Mets going to be able to reverse their fortunes and not only get back to the World Series, but finally win it?
