As the fantasy baseball season reaches its final weeks, managers are hunting for every possible advantage.

Nevertheless, securing a championship isn’t just about finding the next hot waiver-wire bat, it is equally about protecting the pillars of your pitching staff.

Navigating the closing stretch requires a crucial strategy: monitoring the innings-pitched limits for your young starting pitchers.

Though many modern analysts dismiss the famous Verducci Effect, several MLB front offices still subscribe to its core theory that a year-to-year innings increase of 30 or more for pitchers under 25 years old leads to severe injury or performance decline.

Teams recognize that too high of a year-to-year workload spike puts immense stress on a young pitcher’s arm, potentially leading to injuries down the road. For fantasy managers, ignoring these looming organization-imposed restrictions can derail an otherwise dominant season.

We are already seeing prominent teams shift into preservation mode. Take the Reds, who have proactively reduced the workload of budding superstar Chase Burns.

In a recent matchup against the Dodgers, Burns was dominant, but the Reds pulled him after just three no-hit innings. It was a stark reminder that real-life player preservation trumps fantasy championship pursuit.

Similarly, the Pirates appear to be reaching a crossroads. Falling five games out of the final NL wild-card spot makes their postseason path steep.

Consequently, they could look to shut down Braxton Ashcraft to protect his long-term health. Ashcraft has already logged 165 ¹/₃ innings this season. Though he threw 156 total innings back in 2024, he tossed just 118 frames last year.

The Pirates must navigate his year-to-year workload increase with extreme caution, making him a prime shutdown candidate.

The Nationals face a similar dilemma with Cade Cavalli. Cavalli has enjoyed a spectacular breakout campaign, anchoring fantasy rotations with a stellar 3.12 ERA and an elite 10.49 K/9. Nevertheless, he already has thrown 158 ²/₃ innings, representing a massive 36-inning increase over his previous year’s total. With Washington out of the playoff hunt, a premature shutdown is likely.

Other notable young arms are flashing warning signs. Marlins right-hander Eury Pérez has clearly hit a wall, struggling noticeably as the heavy workload catches up to him down the stretch. Meanwhile the White Sox are micro-managing Davis Martin, who was recently pulled from his start after throwing a mere 68 pitches.

Down the stretch, you must monitor these fantasy rotations daily. Identify the young pitchers on your roster nearing their career highs in volume, actively scan local beat reports for workload rumors, and secure reliable veteran insurance policies on the waiver wire before these elite young arms disappear from active MLB rosters.
