Gotham FC in talks to move to NYCFC’s new Queens stadium

News RoomBy News RoomMay 13, 20260 ViewsNo Comments

Gotham FC might be on the move.

The 2025 NWSL champions are exploring the possibility of relocating to New York City FC’s new soccer stadium in Queens as soon as 2028. Sportico reported Wednesday that the clubs are in advanced talks about a deal.

Several sources told The Post that nothing has been finalized.

Gotham has called Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, N.J., home since 2021. They share the venue with the Red Bulls of MLS.

NYCFC currently plays some of their matches at each of New York’s MLB stadiums. The new stadium, Etihad Park, which NYCFC owners are funding with $780 million, will be located next to Citi Field and is expected to open before the 2027-28 MLS season.

But Gotham is considering becoming a fellow tenant of Etihad Park.

“Like many clubs, especially in the NWSL as the league rapidly grows, we regularly evaluate options to best support our players, supporters and organization,” Gotham said in a statement. “We don’t have any updates to share right now.”

The Post asked NYCFC COO Jennifer O’Sullivan about the possibility of a women’s team coming to the new stadium in March.

“We’ve always had it in our DNA about bringing a women’s team… We’ve always wanted to do that,” she said. “The stadium has had to be the first domino to fall for us. We’d always said we’d bring one in when we had the right infrastructure and the right facilities to be able to support. We’ve kind of been parallel pathing and trying to figure out all the different opportunities and options that are available to us when it comes to a women’s team. We’re still looking at all of those, but I can guarantee you that someday there will be a women’s team playing in this building, because it’s something we believe in and we really want to have. And so that’s a guarantee. When it will happen, I don’t know, but it will definitely happen for us.”

Asked if she’d engaged with Gotham on the issued, she added, “All opportunities and all options are on the table for us.”

Gotham is set to get a preview of what it might be like to play in “The World’s Borough” this summer when they host Trinity Rodman and the Washington Spirit on July 15 for “The Queens Classic” at Citi Field. Gotham has already distributed more than 16,000 tickets for the highly anticipated match.

Gotham, winners of two of the past three NWSL titles, is averaging 7,748 fans per home game this season — a roughly 12.9 percent decrease from 2025.

Gotham saw a roughly 38 percent jump in attendance after winning the 2023 championship, averaging 8,589 fans per game. Last season, that number rose slightly to 8,892.

Gotham hasn’t had the same success this season.

Late last month, Mayor Zohran Mamdani partnered with Gotham to sell 1,000 tickets to the club’s recent match against Boston Legacy FC for $5 each. The promotion was wildly successful and resulted in a lower-bowl sellout of 11,308 — the fourth-largest regular-season attendance in franchise history.
