Fours-up, baby: UCLA pummels USC in Crosstown Cup

News RoomBy News RoomMay 28, 20260 ViewsNo Comments

The Crosstown Cup runneth over — for UCLA.

For the second time in the last three years, the Bruins have prevailed in the head-to-head all-sports competition with rival USC known as the Crosstown Cup.

The latest battle wasn’t particularly close, with UCLA winning by a 115-75 margin after going 23-12-1 in head-to-head matchups. The 115 points are the second most scored by either school in Crosstown Cup history, trailing only UCLA’s 120 points during the 2023-24 school year and 115 in 2017-18 as well as USC’s 115 in 2015-16.

While USC’s football team prevailed in the most high-profile matchup, UCLA swept all four meetings between the teams in men’s and women’s basketball on the way to winning the Bruins’ first NCAA championship in the latter sport.

“Winning championships is the goal at UCLA and our Bruins delivered once again this year, topping the conference leaderboard with three NCAA Championships and eight Big Ten titles,” UCLA athletics director Martin Jarmond said in a statement.

“No game in this storied rivalry is won easily, and bringing the Crosstown Cup back to Westwood is another tremendous accomplishment for our coaches and student-athletes.”

How does scoring in the Crosstown Cup work?

Each of the 19 sports in which both rivals field teams has the opportunity to win 10 points toward the Cup based on head-to-head results.

If the teams win an equal number of matchups, the points are split.

Sports that do not feature head-to-head competition award their 10 points to the highest finisher in conference play.

UCLA earned the full 10 points in nine sports — women’s cross-country, women’s basketball, men’s basketball, men’s volleyball, beach volleyball, men’s golf, men’s tennis, men’s track & field and baseball. Five sports — women’s volleyball, men’s water polo, women’s soccer, women’s water polo and women’s tennis — split the points.

The official head-to-head battle in a rivalry that dates to the 1920s to determine an annual champion started with the 2001-02 school year.
