Bryson DeChambeau withdrew from the final round of LIV Golf Mexico City on Sunday after he felt discomfort in his wrist while playing the day before, capping what was a dramatic event for the popular golfer and the rebel golf league.
The two-time U.S. Open champion announced the decision in a post on social media.
“I experienced some discomfort in my wrist during yesterday’s round and have decided to withdraw from the final round of LIV Golf Mexico City to prevent further injury,” he said. “Not how I wanted this week to go, but wishing the Crushers a strong finish. I’m going to take a few days to get evaluated and hope to be ready for LIV Golf Virginia.”
The week has been a tough one for DeChambeau, who had struggled on the course all week and had been heard criticizing the course conditions at Club de Golf Chapultepec on Thursday.
He had been 16 shots behind Jon Rahm going into Sunday after two even par rounds and then shooting a two-over 73 on Saturday.
DeChambeau’s moment on Thursday came when he had shot out of a bunker and over the green into an area that the golfer was heard saying had “destroyed grass.”
In the clip posted on social media, DeChambeau could be heard also saying sarcastically, “Oh, is this rough? Definitely good to see.”
All of this came on the heels on a dramatic day on Wednesday when reports indicating that the Saudi Public Investment Fund was getting ready to pull its financial support of LIV Golf threw the sport into chaos.
LIV Golf is funded through the end of the 2026 golf season, but there are massive questions swirling around the future of the golf league after this year.
The Mexico City event and the golf league were also dealt another embarrassment when local power outages led to technical difficulties with the broadcast of the tournament that lasted for more than an hour.
