Shedeur Sanders isn’t moving from Cleveland anytime soon.
The Browns’ backup quarterback, who recently hired an agent for the first time in his career, reportedly will not be traded, according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.
Cleveland has had Deshaun Watson as the starter all season with some surprising success after he looked like a shell of himself for the last few seasons.
Given Watson’s strong performance, which has led the Browns to a 5-2 record, Sanders appears firmly stuck as the backup after previously being expected to mix in at some point this season following a razor-thin training camp quarterback battle.
Sanders, who was expected to be a first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft before falling to the sixth round, went through the entire process without hiring an agent, which some have said contributed to his draft-day fall.
Sanders hired an agent earlier this month, a move many have said was meant to facilitate a trade to a new team.
The latest report stating that the Browns have no interest in making the former Colorado star available in a trade is at least a little surprising, considering he looks unlikely to play this season barring an injury to Watson.
Cleveland appears ready to keep developing Sanders as a potential future player, with Watson mercifully entering the final year of his contract.
Sanders did show some glimpses during his rookie season, throwing for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions in eight games after taking over as the starter from an injured Dillon Gabriel.
If Watson does lead the Browns to the playoffs, he could land a contract extension with Cleveland despite the nightmare his deal has been since his arrival.
Watson is entering is eighth game of the season, which will be a season-high for him in a Browns uniform, having dealt with injuries for each of the last four seasons.
