Brazil’s women’s national team saw eight red cards in a chaotic 1-0 home loss to the United States on Tuesday in Fortaleza’s Arena Castelao, with 55,144 spectators packing the arena for the friendly.
The first half was highly physical, but no score came out of it.
In the second half, Sophia Wilson forced an own-goal in the match’s lone score when her shot deflected off Brazil’s Isabela Chagas.
Brazil was left with just nine players at match’s end.
Head coach Arthur Elias, some of his staff members and Bea Zaneratto were sent off in the second half in an emotional moment in front of the huge home crowd.
Tarciane elbowed Wilson, and two more players following the final whistle to total eight ejections for Brazil.
The US got a bit of revenge over Brazil in the match, having lost their previous two matches against next year’s Women’s World Cup hosts.
Team USA coach Emma Hayes said before the game that the American squad would need to show more toughness to defeat Brazil in their second of two friendlies this week.
In the first one Sunday, Brazil beat the US 2-1.
The US held possession of the ball for 55 percent of the match, even though only one of 13 shots on goal went in. The Americans held Brazil to six shots, none of which were on goal.
The final 25 minutes of the match saw multiple stoppages due to ejections.
The US will now go on hiatus from international competition for several months.
Their next international matchup will take place Nov. 27 against El Salvador in the Concacaf W Championship, one of the lead-up qualifying events for the 2027 World Cup.
