Young American doubles duo pulls off another upset at US Open

Upset

The young American duo of Brandon Carpico and Nikita Filin knocked off veteran pair Marcelo Melo and John Peers in the second round of the doubles tournament, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 at the Grandstand court.

Melo and Peers have played together on and off since 2023, and each has reached the U.S. Open final with different partners in the past. The wild-card American duo of Carpico and Filin had already upset No. 8 seeds Orlando Luz and Rafael Matos in the first round.

“I played in the COVID year where this entire facility was completely empty,” Taylor Townsend said about her appreciation for U.S. Open fans. “That was a real wake-up call as to how important the fans are. So for me, ever since that year, I would never take fans and people who come out and support and buy tickets and show up and cheer and have 15 Honey Deuces, I will never take that for granted again.”

That’s One Hip Dip

Reasons U.S. Open attendees willingly wait in long lines for a Salt Hank’s sandwich can vary depending on whom you ask.

For 26-year-old Connecticut native Gavin McGee, it was because his social media feeds were “flooded” with videos of people at the Open enjoying the $38 French dip sandwich. For Rob Carlson, a 64-year-old Brooklynite, word of mouth and long lines convinced him it must be “worth the wait.”

Emma Barrett put her reason most succinctly: “Social media is the reason. … And I’m f–king hungry.”

Whatever the reason, lines have consistently wrapped around the corner for the sandwich — prime rib with caramelized onions, provolone, horseradish aioli and au jus — since the U.S. Open began late last month. Salt Hank’s creator, Henry Laporte, gained notoriety for his food videos on social media during the COVID-19 pandemic and last year opened a brick-and-mortar shop in the West Village, which serves just one menu item: the French dip.

While the USTA didn’t have a count of how many sandwiches have been sold throughout the tournament, USTA National Tennis Center COO Danny Zausner said Salt Hank’s has sold “threefold” its daily Manhattan shop total.
