One of 2026’s biggest success stories is undoubtedly Project Hail Mary, a sci-fi adventure starring Ryan Gosling as a middle-school teacher who wakes up one day aboard a spaceship – with no memory of how he got there.
The Phil Lord and Christopher Miller-directed movie was an instant hit when it debuted last March and eventually grossed nearly $700 million at the worldwide box office.
Some people, including the Watch With Us crew, were recently wondering when it would be available to stream on a subscription-based platform like Prime Video.
Well, we finally got our answer. We now know when Project Hail Mary will be streaming, and it’s sooner than you’d think. But there’s one big catch involved that could prevent some from watching it at home.
When Is ‘Project Hail Mary’ Streaming?
Project Hail Mary will make its streaming debut next week on Thursday, June 18.
OK, So What’s the Catch?
Even though Amazon released the movie, Project Hail Mary will not be available to stream on Prime Video – at least, not yet.
Instead, it will debut on MGM+, a streaming service many people don’t have. At $7.99 a month, it’s one of the cheaper streamers to subscribe to, and Project Hail Mary is worth it to give the platform a try for at least a month.
What Is ‘Project Hail Mary’ About?
Here’s the official synopsis from Amazon: “Science teacher Ryland Grace (Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light-years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction … but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.”
As you can tell, Project Hail Mary is primarily a science fiction story with elements of action, drama and yes, even some (b)romance. There’s also a memorable scene involving a character singing Harry Styles’ “Sign of the Times” at a karaoke bar, which starts funny but gains unexpected emotional resonance by the end.
Who Stars in ‘Project Hail Mary’?
Gosling leads the small cast as Ryland Grace, an everyman who finds himself in an extraordinary situation. Anatomy of a Fall’s Sandra Hüller stars as Eva Stratt, the head of the Project Hail Mary mission on Earth and one of the few people who believes Ryland can save the world.
Hüller is second-billed, but Gosling’s true costar is Rocky, a puppet voiced by James Ortiz. Rocky is an alien who has no eyes and communicates largely through sound and movement. Rocky is Ryland’s only friend on his long, lonesome journey, and their friendship is at the center of the film’s dramatic appeal. The rest of the cast includes Industry’s Ken Leung, First Cow’s Orion Lee and Meryl Streep in an unexpected vocal cameo as … well, I’ll let you find out for yourself.
Is ‘Project Hail Mary’ Worth Watching?
Oh, yeah! Project Hail Mary is one of the rare mainstream movies that was critically acclaimed and had everyone talking this past spring. While it’s based on a bestselling novel by Andy Weir, the film felt fresh and stood out from franchise fare like Scream 7 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
Don’t take our word for it, though. Check out the film’s impressive 94 percent Rotten Tomatoes score, and you’ll be convinced that the film is not only worth seeing once, it’s also worth seeing multiple times. It stands a good chance at being nominated for Best Picture when next year’s Oscars roll around, but that’s a topic for a different article.
