Why Kyle Shanahan is not concerned over injury-riddled 49ers roster

News RoomBy News RoomAugust 8, 20260 ViewsNo Comments

One of the biggest topics at the San Francisco 49ers’ training camp has been the rapid number of injuries on the roster.

Despite a growing number of players on the injury report, coach Kyle Shanahan didn’t seem too concerned about it.

“It feels pretty normal, give or take three,” Shanahan said. “I think it does happen a number of times in camp. We also have a number of guys that didn’t go on [the Physically Unable to Perform list] that we weren’t trying to throw back in there right away.”

Shanahan said these kinds of things are always frustrating during camp. He mentioned third-year veteran wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, who will miss the 2026 season after having knee surgery.

“The thing that frustrates you most is when you lose a guy,” Shanahan said of Pearsall. “There’s one guy like that right now … and you gotta learn how to adjust and move on.”

Since 2014, the 49ers have ranked as one of the most injured franchises in football and are already becoming one of the most injured teams in training camp.

Since the team reported to camp on July 26, they’ve logged 19 players on the injured list; four of them are from the wide receiver room. Lucrative free-agent signing Mike Evans, rookie De’Zhaun Stribling and veteran Christian Kirk joined Pearsall on the IL.

Two of the 19 players the team has listed include George Kittle and Nick Bosa, who both had their seasons abruptly end last year due to injury.

Kittle ruptured his Achilles during last year’s wild-card game against the Philadelphia Eagles and has been seen working his way back to the football field during the offseason. Bosa is working his way back from a torn ACL he suffered in Week 3 against the Arizona Cardinals.

Bosa was hoping to practice with the team when training camp started but has not been able to participate.

“He was doing great, and then he got sore, just going through some of the individuals. I mean, you wish that didn’t happen,” Shanahan said. “… There’s no concern to where something’s happened that was a big setback or anything, but we’re waiting for that soreness to go away and evaluate him on why that soreness happened.”
