The Morning Show raised the stakes ahead of the season 4 finale by having Bradley involved in a major betrayal.
During the Wednesday, October 29, episode of the hit Apple TV+ series, Bradley (Reese Witherspoon) turned Claire (Bel Powley) in before she was able to go on TMS with Yanko’s (Néstor Carbonell) help. Bradley called FBI agent Andy Montgomery (John Hoogenakker), who arrested Claire before Yanko vowed never to work with his cohost again.
“This is the soup that they are always cooking. There’s always an instance where people have to choose if it’s journalistic integrity vs. your own personal desires,” Hoogenakker, 48, exclusively told Us Weekly about the shakeup. “Bradley having to make that choice was huge.”
Hoogenakker hinted that the aftermath will be “devastating” for Yanko.
“That relationship [with Claire] did not end the way he wanted it to,” he noted. “When we came in to film that, everyone just loved to get in there and mix it up. It’s just a great group of people. I was welcomed warmly for those scenes.”
The actor continued: “As far as what that will do to their relationships going forward, I feel like I’ve seen relationships get battered very badly on this show and sometimes people just come back because they’re on a mission together.”
The Morning Show, which premiered in 2019, follows the behind-the-scenes drama of a popular morning news program. In addition to Hoogenakker, Jennifer Aniston, Witherspoon, Billy Crudup, Karen Pittman, Mark Duplass, Greta Lee, Jon Hamm, Nicole Beharie, Marion Cotillard and Carbonell returned this season while newcomers Jeremy Irons, Aaron Pierre, William Jackson Harper and Boyd Holbrook joined the show.
Lee, 42, confirmed earlier this month that she has exited the show after Stella boarded a plane by herself.
“This is the first time I’m saying it out loud but yeah, this is the end,” Lee said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “This is goodbye.”
She continued: “There were a lot of factors. Of course, I would have loved to have stayed on indefinitely. This is like family to me. I moved to L.A. because of this show a few years ago from New York. I had my babies while doing the show and so much has happened. But it got to the point where it just wasn’t possible. These shows are such a commitment.”
Lee called the decision for her to leave The Morning Show a mutual decision.
“It’s shocking. But, this is it. This is the end of the road for [Stella], and I feel all kinds of things. We’re with these characters for so long, it’s surreal. I haven’t been able to say anything because I didn’t want to spoil it, but I’ve known for some time now that this is the end of the road for her and this is her goodbye,” she continued. “The writers came back with this story line and it’s so bittersweet, but I also feel this was the end. Sometimes it’s that hard thing where it’s time. It’s time for a character to move on.”
Lee concluded: “I always felt with Stella like we were doing something new. That was something I could never take for granted every day I was at work. Given everything that happened and knowing we were moving toward this goodbye, it was painful. I’m not one to carry things home with me, because I have two young kids who have zero tolerance or patience for that. But it was hard.”
According to the official synopsis, the rest of the show follows as the newsroom “must grapple with newfound responsibility, hidden motives and the elusive nature of truth in a polarized America. In a world rife with deepfakes, conspiracy theories and corporate cover-ups — who can you trust? And how can you know what’s actually real?”
Hoogenakker’s guest appearances in season 4 come after he was originally a fan of The Morning Show.
“Season 3 was just a master class. I just think it’s absolutely phenomenal and very humbling to be on the same docket with those guys,” he told Us. “I didn’t go so deep into the FBI [research for my role]. But I am a big student of current events. I’m super excited about a TV show that has real time current events as the backdrop for the show — and the way in which those real time current events affect all the relationships in the show.”
The Morning Show airs new episodes Wednesdays on Apple TV+.
