With the explosive The White Lotus season 3 finale in the rearview, Us can’t wait to see what showrunner Mike White does next with the series — and where in the world he does it.
Although The White Lotus premiered as a limited series in August 2021 (pandemic restrictions granted the production team rare access to film across an entire resort property), its huge success spurred two additional seasons, making it an anthology series in which each season takes place at a different White Lotus resort.
The first season took place in Hawaii, followed by the second season in Sicily, Italy, and the third in Thailand. Before the third installment even premiered, The White Lotus was renewed for a fourth season in January 2025.
But where will our favorite wealthy, debaucherous and sometimes murderous cast of characters go next season? Us Weekly has a good guess.
Given that each White Lotus season is filmed at a Four Seasons resort location, it is possible to use the process of elimination to narrow down which resorts are up for grabs for White, 54, to select.
Ruling out the three resorts already used as filming locations (the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, the Four Seasons Taormina at San Domenico Palace and the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui), brings us to 131 property options. It’s also safe to assume that White won’t want to return to any resorts in Hawaii, Italy or Thailand so as not to be repetitive, bringing us down to 122 properties.
Here’s the catch: While all seasons so far have taken place on beachfront resorts, White recently said, “For the fourth season, I want to get a little bit out of the ‘crashing waves against rocks’ vernacular.”
But don’t get too excited: it’s very unlikely they would do a ski resort or any cold climate for that matter according to White Lotus producer David Bernad.
“I’d bet $100,000 we don’t end up in the cold next. Even if we flirted with the idea, Mike just wouldn’t want to be in the cold. He hates it,” he told The Hollywood Reporter earlier this month.
Eliminating all beachfront resorts — along with those in U.S. continental cities, given the past precedent of overseas travel following season one’s Hawaiian adventure — brings us to 43 remaining options.
White said at Sydney’s Vivid Festival that his dream would be “would be to hit every continent,” and just last week he told Howard Stern, “I don’t think we’re going to go to South America. I think probably not,” ahead of his own personal vacation to Colombia.
Taking out South America, North America, Europe and Asia as potential options leaves just five properties — and all signs point to Africa.
Two Cairo locations, one at Nile Plaza and one at The First Residence, in addition to the Four Seasons Safari Lodge at Serengeti National Park, The Westcliff in Johannesburg and the Four Seasons in Marrakech are on Us’ shortlist for season 4 filming locations.
Will we see a new cast of fan favorites marveling at the Great Pyramids? Rubbing elbows with elephants and lions on Serengeti safari? Maybe!
A season in Johannesburg, South Africa — a country still grappling with the haunting legacy of apartheid — would align with the themes The White Lotus is all about: wealth disparity, indigenous cultures, colonialism, racial inequities and satirizing the social and political issues of the locale.
Furthermore, since White has acknowledged “where we choose to go next could be hugely impactful to that destination,” a White Lotus season in South Africa could help boost the country’s economy (which has seen a sharp decline over the last decade) and raise awareness of both the current and past issues the nation has faced.
While we can give our best guess, at the end of the day, nobody knows what is up Mike White’s sleeve except Mike White. (Take that season 3 finale for example —come on!) But we’ll be seated every Sunday when season 4 premieres no matter where in the world the show ends up.
