What is a ‘Wolverine shot’? The biohacking booster athletes love

News RoomBy News RoomNovember 3, 20262 ViewsNo Comments

It’s a beast of a shot.

With the Trump administration easing access to unproven peptide drugs favored by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the small molecules with big buzz are popping up everywhere.

And two particularly popular peptides make up a combo that fans have nicknamed the “Wolverine shot” or “Wolverine stack,” raving that it offers a big boost for fitness recovery.

While the body creates peptides (short chains of amino acids) naturally to help processes like metabolism and tissue repair, synthetic versions — like GLP-1s — are created to mimic these substances.

The global peptide market doesn’t show signs of slowing down, and is expected to nearly triple to $11.2 billion by 2035. Searches for “Wolverine stack” are surging.

Named after the comic book superhero Wolverine, who can heal from injuries with supernatural speed, the injectable is a combination of two peptides: BPC-157 and TB-500.

They might be a big hit for gym bros and biohackers, but the scientific evidence is limited when it comes to the purported benefits.

Biohacker Dave Asprey and podcaster Joe Rogan are fans of BPC-157 (short for Body Protection Compound 157), the synthetic version of a gastric peptide made in the stomach.

Based on its ability to repair the lining of the gut and intestinal tissue, it’s also being explored for tissue repair, muscle growth, pain relief, arthritis, and bone and joint support.

Meanwhile, TB-500 is modeled after Thymosin Beta-4, a naturally occurring protein and a favorite of biohacker Gary Brecka. It’s used for tissue repair and cell growth.

Many people take both together as a “stack” to amplify the effects.

Some experts say these peptides have benefits, taken either together or individually.

Sports medicine physician Dr. Jesse Morse told Business Insider that BPC is a “beautiful peptide” for pain and injuries, and has even been using it himself since 2020.

“BPC can be utilized throughout the body, anywhere from the brain to the ligaments, the tendons, the heart, the joints, literally everywhere,” he said. “It’s like the jack of all trades.”

However, both drugs used in the popular stack are experimental, meaning that while they’ve undergone research, it’s all been animal and test tube studies and they haven’t been tested in humans.

The drugs are also unapproved by the FDA and not legal for human use, but people buy them in an online gray market.

“There’s a huge difference between peptides that have been rigorously studied and approved as medications, such as insulin and GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, and these newer compounds,” Christopher Robinson, a physician-scientist at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, told The Hub.

“Anyone who uses them needs to understand the risks,” he added.

Using these drugs can have serious risks, from injection or manufacturing issues like contamination or irritation at the injection site to unknown long-term health effects like cancer risk or immune system changes.

While gym-goers, biohackers and more continue to use the injectable, a randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled clinical trial is planned for summer 2027.

The trial will follow patients using BCP post-shoulder surgery to see if the synthetic drug speeds up healing or has any side effects.

While principal investigator of the study, Dr. Shiloah Kviatkovsky, told Business Insider that the trial will be an early step toward assessing whether BPC-157 is safe and effective for humans, she also warned that “the market is ahead of the research, which is a little frightening.”
