What Are Exercise Snacks? The New Wellness Trend for People Who Hate Going to the Gym

News RoomBy News RoomAugust 20, 20262 ViewsNo Comments

Exercise snacks, short and sharp bursts of movement squeezed into everyday life, are drawing new attention as busy Americans look for ways to stay healthy without hitting the gym. Here is what the research and doctors actually say about the trend.

What Are Exercise Snacks?

Exercise snacks are quick, intense bouts of movement built into your regular routine, from a set of squats between meetings to carrying groceries up the stairs. They are meant to break up long stretches of sitting, not replace traditional workouts.

Dr. Michael Fredericson, director of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Sports Medicine in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Stanford, told People magazine the concept centers on “these three to four bursts of really high intensity exercise throughout the day, built into your regular life.” He gave examples like doing squats, carrying groceries home or shoveling snow. Jonathan Little, a professor in the School of Health and Exercise Sciences at the University of British Columbia, cautioned that exercise snacks are “not meant to ‘replace’ other types of traditional exercise such as walking, jogging, lifting weights, sports, or going to the gym,” according to Very Well Health.

Do Exercise Snacks Improve Heart Health and Blood Sugar?

Exercise snacks appear to help with metabolism, overall health and blood sugar control, but they do not deliver the same heart health payoffs as longer, sustained workouts.

Fredericson told People magazine that with exercise snacks, “you don’t see as many benefits in terms of blood pressure decreasing, cholesterol decreasing, or even strength improving,” and the approach is “not as good for weight loss.” A 2026 study Little co-authored found just four minutes of exercise spread throughout the day can help control blood sugar, especially after meals. “It is likely that the exercise snacks caused muscles to take up more glucose from the blood and this helped to lower blood sugar, especially the blood sugar spikes after meals,” Little said, per Very Well Health. He noted it was the first study of exercise snacks among people with type 2 diabetes and that more research is still needed.

Who Benefits Most from Exercise Snacks?

People with sedentary jobs, packed schedules or no easy access to a gym stand to gain the most, and the approach looks particularly promising for people with type 2 diabetes.

Fredericson said “there’s a lot of ways you can still do things that may not be traditional exercise, but it’s still going to give you tremendous health benefits.” The strategy also targets what has been called the “active couch potato” problem, where people who exercise regularly still spend most of their day sitting. Jo Blodgett, a senior research fellow at the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health at University College London, told the BBC that regular gym sessions or a weekly football game are “a good thing” but will not offset sitting at a desk all day or spending evenings on the couch. “Thirty minutes in the gym is only a tiny part of it. What about the other 23-and-a-half hours?” she said.

How Can You Add Exercise Snacks to Your Day?

Aim for short bursts of movement every 15 to 30 minutes, whether that means push-ups and squats at home, walk-and-talk meetings at the office or simply standing up to shake out during a long stretch at your desk.

Fredericson said he moves at least every 30 minutes when working from home, doing push-ups, squats and jumping jacks. “It really helps my overall fitness, but also helps stabilize my glucose throughout the day,” he said. Blodgett suggested standing up every 15 or 30 minutes to shake around before sitting back down. At work, options include walk-and-talk meetings for phone calls or using half a lunch break for a walk instead of scrolling on your phone. Little acknowledged much is still unknown about the ideal dose. “For example, what are the best exercises, how many do you need to do each day, [and] how long should each exercise snack be? We don’t know the answers to these questions yet, but the data are intriguing that a very small amount of exercise, done vigorously and interspersed throughout the day, might have some health benefits,” Little said.
