Washington Monument will glow on New Year’s Eve to kick off America’s 250th anniversary

It’s going to be lit.

The Washington Monument will double as a giant birthday candle on New Year’s Eve to kick off the yearlong celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.

Freedom 250, a nonprofit group launched by President Trump earlier this month to lead the semiquincentennial festivities, plans to illuminate the towering obelisk on the National Mall in Washington, DC, with patriotic projections telling the story of America starting on Wednesday.

“The illumination of the Washington Monument marks the beginning of a momentous year for our nation — 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence,” said Keith Krach, CEO of Freedom 250.

“We invite every American — and every friend of America — to join this historic celebration of the triumph of the American spirit.”

Freedom 250 began testing the light show earlier this week. One projection displayed “250” and stars on the monument to the nation’s first president in red, white and blue.

A spokesperson for the group told The Post revelers can expect imagery of George Washington crossing the Delaware River and Christopher Columbus’ voyage to the New World.

A “sweeping visual narrative” of the country’s founding and history will be projected on the Washington Monument every night through Jan. 5.

On the opening night of the display, a 250-foot birthday candle and New Year’s Eve countdown will glow from the monument.

The moment will be accompanied by a “large-scale fireworks display” at midnight, according to Freedom 250, filling the sky above the National Mall in a “powerful visual finale.”

The group hopes the dazzling display will allow Americans to take part in a “shared national moment.”

The display will be the first of several “marquee national events” Freedom 250 is organizing to celebrate the nation’s founding.

The Great American State Fair in June, a national prayer gathering in May and the Patriot Games in the fall had previously been announced.

Trump has also teased plans to construct a huge triumphal arch across the Potomac River from the Lincoln Memorial and host a UFC match on the grounds of the White House.
