Vanity Fair profile on Usha Vance claims she ‘built JD’ Vance

News RoomBy News RoomAugust 12, 202613 ViewsNo Comments

WASHINGTON — Usha Vance is the quiet force who built JD Vance into the vice president he is today, according to a new profile of the second lady.

A 5,500-word profile in Vanity Fair cast Vance, 40, as a sophisticated lawyer and mother of four who has been JD’s “spirit guide to elite institutional life” since the pair met 16 years ago at Yale Law School.

Usha “saw tremendous potential in JD,” a law school classmate told the magazine.

“She built JD into this creation of the coastal Acela corridor. It’s not an immigrant story; it’s a meritocracy story,” the unnamed classmate said.

When it comes to her romance with Vance, the 6-foot-2 inch US Marine was always her type.

“She does like a man who has a lot to say for himself. In the past, most of her liaisons have been tall, handsome, and conservative,” according to a profile in a Yale publication, cited in Vanity Fair.

Vance didn’t sit for an interview with Vanity Fair, but the magazine spoke to former classmates and the couple’s friends to outline the instrumental role Usha played in JD’s meteoric rise from lawyer to senator and now vice president of the United States.

Her almost invisible presence is by design. “Like many ambitious spouses of powerful politicians, Usha has learned to operate in private,” the magazine noted.

She has been a quiet but visible presence at her husband’s side, traveling with him on some of his most high-profile trips, including a trip to Greenland in March 2025 and to Switzerland in June for peace talks with Iran — this one while pregnant.

Their closeness was their trait from the start.

At Yale, they were a popular couple on campus, earning the nickname: Judusha, a mash-up of JD, Usha and “judicial.”

After graduation, Usha Vance built her own legal career. She clerked for a series of Republican-appointed judges, including Brett Kavanaugh on the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit and Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts.

Vance was working at Munger, Tolles & Olson when JD was named to the Republican ticket in 2020.

A classmate at Yale described her to the magazine as: “the quintessential, ubiquitous Yale Law student whom I like to call a ‘gold star chaser.’ Usha took it to the next level. I never understood why she was trying so hard.”

She left law firm life to become second lady. Publicly, she sticks to issues that are both MAGA and mom-friendly, including supporting childhood literacy.

She’s proven she can deftly handle the spotlight or when things don’t go to plan.

When President Trump appeared on her podcast last month to read the children’s book “Presidents Play,” Usha was unfazed when he strayed from the text to offer extemporaneous commentary about his presidential predecessors.

Her relationship with first lady Melania Trump is cordial, despite their differences. For one, the former model makes high-end fashion choices compared with Vance, who embraces off-the-rack affordable clothing.

During her pregnancy, Vance touted the $12 dress from Old Navy she wore in one of her podcast videos.

Whether the White House becomes the next stop on the Vances’ political journey, friends advise people not to feel sorry for Usha.

“It’s patronizing to say that she’s been silenced,” they said. “She has chosen this.”

The Post reached out to the Vances for comment.
