President Trump signaled Thursday that he expects Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) to get the boot from Congress if it turns out that she used a âfake nameâ when she was sworn in.
âItâs not looking good,â Trump said of Omarâs legal predicament after bombshell court filings related to the federal immigration fraud probe against the congresswoman revealed her actual surname â Elmi â is identical to that of her ex-husband, who is also rumored to be her biological brother.
âShe used a fake name to be sworn in,â Trump asserted at a rally in Iowa. âI assume she must immediately have to resign from Congress.â
The president directed rally-goers to âplease inform our great Speaker of the House of Representatives ⦠that the Democrat Party has just conceded her seat. That Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, her real name, has openly admitted to fraud, and she will not be legally allowed to be a member of that august body any longer.â
âShe won’t be able,â he continued. âI mean, I don’t know: If you get sworn in with a false name, I would imagine that’s pretty tough to remain.â
Prosecutors referred to the Minnesota Democrat as âIlhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar,â in a Wednesday filing in DC federal court.
A source familiar with the investigation confirmed that Omar is not the congresswomanâs ârealâ last name, meaning she was born with the last name of Elmi.
Reps for Omar did not immediately respond to The Postâs request for comment.
Trump also mocked Omarâs less-than-forceful denial that her ex-husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, may be a blood relative.
âNot to my knowledge,â Omar responded when asked directly on MS NOW on Wednesday whether she was related to her former husband.
Trump called it âone of the worst answers I think I’ve ever heard.â
âYou know I’ve heard some bad political answers ⦠but that would be about the worst,â the president said, arguing that Omar âdidn’t know whether or not she married her brother.â
Trump, who has long been critical of Omar, went on to call her a âscammer.â
âI’m pretty good at watching that stuff, and she’s been a scammer for a long time,â he said.
Earlier this week, the president suggested Omar could face jail time if convicted of immigration fraud.
âShe could go to jail,â Trump said Tuesday. âThey keep talking about deportation.â
The Minnesota Democrat maintains she became a citizen at age 17 through her father, who became a naturalized citizen in 2000, five years after emigrating to the US.
She has vehemently denied any wrongdoing.
During the rally, Trump also announced plans to use federal dollars to expand domestic diesel and gasoline production.
âIn more breaking news, my administration is using the Defense Production Act to release $150 million to increase American refining capacity to produce more diesel and more gasoline at record levels,â the president said.
In a statement, Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the funds âwill be used strategically and in partnership with private industry to rapidly bolster Americaâs existing energy infrastructure.â
âBy restoring energy addition policies, we will continue to unleash American energy dominance and lower costs for the American people,â Wright added.
