President Trump announced Wednesday that Iran has released a wrongfully detained US citizen as a “gesture of Goodwill.”
“Iran has allowed an American Citizen, who was wrongfully detained in December of 2024 under the ‘presidency’ of Sleepy Joe Biden, to leave the Country,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“She is now safely outside of Iran, and in good condition,” the president added. “The United States of America appreciates this gesture of Goodwill by Iran!”
The woman was identified as Dena Karari by her lawyer Jared Genser, who specializes in international human rights.
“I am delighted and excited to report that my client US citizen Dena Karari who had been trapped in Iran since December 2024 on bogus charges is now free,” he wrote on X.
“This would not have happened but for the extraordinary and relentless efforts of President Trump. Dena is now safe and traveling back to the United States.”
Last August, the New York Times reported that Iran detained an Iranian American woman in December 2024 and charged with espionage.
The dual citizen worked for a US technology company and also ran a charity for children in Iran, according to the outlet.
She was released from prison but the regime confiscated her American and Iranian passports, preventing from leaving the country. It’s unclear if this is the same woman Trump was referring to.
The James W. Foley Legacy Foundation, a hostage advocacy organization, says there are currently at least two US nationals being wrongfully detained in Iran.
