St. John’s Sweet 16 drought has finally ended.

The Johnnies are back tonight with a chance to extend its postseason run, but the challenge is clear: a matchup against a top-seeded Duke team that has been one of the most consistent programs in the country all season.

The No. 5 ranked Red Storm advanced after a tight win 67-65 win over Kansas in the second round and have relied on defense and physical play to get this far. That approach has kept games close, but it will be tested against a Duke roster that scores efficiently and limits mistakes.

“You can’t be happy where you are at this point because if you get content playing a team like Duke, you’re going to get blown out,” St. John’s head coach Rick Pitino said. “You have to be really hungry and believe. We got to foster that type of belief. If you don’t, usually you go home.”

Duke enters the game on a lengthy winning streak dating back to Feb. 7 and has regularly controlled both tempo and shot selection. Injured Blue Devils guard Caleb Foster has missed the last five games with a fractured foot, could play tonight and remains a game time decision.

“He’s going to give it everything he has to go tomorrow night,” Jon Scheyer said yesterday.
