Spain star Yeremy Pino could miss rest of World Cup as injuries pile up in major concern

Spain’s quest to win their first World Cup in 16 years has suddenly become much more daunting.

There is fear that star winger Yeremy Pino and fellow winger Nico Williams will be sidelined for the remainder of the World Cup with injuries suffered Friday, according to The Athletic.

Pino injured his collarbone, while Williams sustained a groin injury after the two entered in the second half of Friday’s 1-0 win over Uruguay, which clinched Group H.

They will undergo “scans” on Saturday, per The Athletic, and Spain returns to the pitch on July 2 to face the runner-up from Group J at 3 p.m. ET in the Round of 32.

“Pino can miss the rest of the World Cup,” Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente said after the match, per The Athletic. “It is a collarbone injury. We will do more scans tomorrow.

“He was suffering a lot, it was heroic that he helped us until the end of the game.”

Pino, the 23-year-old who plays for Crystal Palace in the Premier League, entered Friday’s game in the 66th minute and suffered the injury after falling hard to turf and grabbing his left shoulder.

A photo circulating on social media showed him with his left arm in a sling.

He has not scored in this World Cup.

Williams, a 28-year-old who plays for Athletic Bilbao in Spain, entered in the 76th minute.

Every match of the FIFA World Cup will air on either FOX or FOX Sports 1. If you don’t have cable, you can take advantage of a DIRECTV free trial to stream it all.

His groin discomfort comes after he returned from a recent injury, adding even more concern to the situation.

Williams, too, has yet to get in the scoring column.

“[Williams] felt discomfort,” De la Fuente said, per ESPN. “It could be a strain, or it might be fatigue. But the worst thing is the huge pain we feel with Yéremy, who could miss the rest of the World Cup.”

Losing the two would be costly for Spain since teams are not allowed to replace players on their rosters once they are 24 hours away from their first match.

Spain is still one of the tournament favorites, owning the third-best odds at DraftKings behind favorite France and reigning champion Argentina.
