Sean McVay’s odd behavior during the Rams’ Ty Simpson draft night press conference was due to a “volatile situation” that had occurred just moments before he got in front microphones, according to Chris Simms.
The former NFL quarterback turned television analyst said on “PFT Live” on Thursday that he learned all about the incident while spending time with McVay at a soccer match in London last week.
“What he did tell me was the reason he in the press conference was pissed off had neither to do with him acting or the pick, but had to do with some sort of volatile situation that happened before they went out there,” Simms said of Los Angeles’ head coach.
“There was some little argument about something. He assured me it was nothing, like, major, but he was a little p’d off right there at that moment. That’s what he told me. I don’t think he’d have any problem with me sharing that. That was that after that.”
McVay and general manager Les Snead fielded questions from media members for several minutes after the Rams surprisingly took Simpson with the No. 13 overall pick in the NFL draft, and throughout the sitdown with journalists, McVay appeared annoyed.
He kept his hands in his pockets, rarely smiled and lacked energy. At the time, speculation was rampant that his uncharacteristic actions were because he would have preferred the Rams had taken a skill position player over a backup quarterback.
Simms, though, was adamant that following his conversations with McVay, he believed the coach was on board with the Simpson selection.
“He told me all his thoughts about the quarterback, the player,” Simms said. “And you know Sean McVay. He’s well thought out. Smart as hell.”
However, when Simms was pressed about the minutia of the alleged argument that put McVay in a bad mood, he explained he couldn’t get anything more out of the Super Bowl-winning coach.
“It was something I wasn’t going to get into there in the owner’s box with all the people around,” he said.
