Scottie Scheffler stormed back into Masters contention on Saturday with a big 7-under 65 during the third round, leaving him four shots back of leaders Rory McIlroy and Cameron Young.
So when he was asked what he felt like the round “could have or should have been,” the two-time green jacket winner may have been caught off guard.
“That’s just a terrible question. Next question. Awful,” Scheffler shot back at Jason Sobel of SiriusXM and CBS Sports before letting out a laugh.
According to Golf Channel, Scheffler later apologized and said the question “wasn’t that bad.”
When a fan asked if Sobel considered that maybe Scheffler doesn’t like him, Sobel replied, “We’ve always gotten along well and he answered my next question a minute later, so… no.”
Scheffler’s own words about his third round give credence to the question. Scheffler mentioned a couple of issues he dealt with on the back nine and then said, “it wasn’t maybe that bad, but it definitely could have been lower,” according to Sobel.
The 29-year-old Scheffler also told CBS’s Amanda Balionis in a TV interview that he felt like he “left a few shots out there.”
Scheffler, who is at the Masters with wife Meredith and their sons Bennett and newborn Remy, is 7-under overall with Young and McIlroy each at 11-under. Scheffler is set to tee off with Haotong Li at 1:52 p.m. ET, with the final pairing of Young and McIlroy set to tee off at 2:25 p.m.
