Freddie Prinze Jr. enjoyed a night out with wife Sarah Michelle Gellar while celebrating the release of the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel.
The couple were all smiles while posing for photos at Los Angeles’ United Theater on Monday, July 14. Gellar, 48, rocked a strapless Oscar de la Renta dress with butterfly embroidery, which she paired with an orange purse. Prinze, meanwhile, matched his wife in a navy blue suit.
Gellar and Prinze Jr.’s appearance at the red carpet event for I Know What You Did Last Summer comes nearly 20 years after they starred in the original slasher film in 1997. The pair walked that carpet separately but started dating three years after meeting on set following a dinner date mix-up.
“We were supposed to have dinner with a friend of ours, and she didn’t make her plane, so we went anyway,” Prinze Jr., 49, recalled to Us Weekly in February 2020. “We’d had tons of dinners before and for some reason, it felt different that night. Organically, it just transitioned into something else.”
They exchanged vows two years later, welcoming daughter Charlotte and son Rocky in 2009 and 2012, respectively. While reflecting on their long-lasting bond, Prinze Jr. credited communication and support for making their marriage successful.
“I played video games since I was a little boy. Sarah knew I played video games. If she ever gave me a hard time about playing video games, Sarah and I would not be together. Period,” he added in 2020. “If you love and respect someone, what brings them joy should make you happy, whether you’re involved with it or not. So, let your girls watch what they want to watch. Let your dudes watch what they want to watch. Don’t give them a hard time. And if you find yourself in one of those relationships, maybe it’s time to have a conversation.”
One year later, Prinze Jr. admitted that he didn’t see himself working on a romantic comedy with his wife in the near future.
“We only worked together, while we were together, on Scooby-Doo, and otherwise neither one of us I felt thought it would be very interesting for us to be in a job together,” he told Us in 2021. “I don’t think it’s that exciting to watch two people struggle to be together when, you know, they’re going home together at the end of the night.”
The actor added: “Odds are, if we were in a movie together it would be a romantic comedy, based on my track record and hers. So yeah, we never thought that was something that we would be that interested in because that’s our life.”
While Prinze Jr. reprised his role as Ray in the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel opposite former costar Jennifer Love Hewitt, who played Julie, Gellar didn’t return following her own character’s onscreen death in the original film. Prinze Jr. recently spoke to Us about traveling to Australia to film the sequel with Gellar by his side.
“I would’ve missed my family a lot, so they came out to visit and they stayed for a little while and visited the set,” he shared earlier this month, noting that the kids had fun getting to look at “fake dead bodies” while he was on set.
