Rep. Ilhan Omar cruises back to Congress despite immigration fraud probe threatening to deport her

News RoomBy News RoomNovember 4, 20260 ViewsNo Comments

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) cruised to re-election Tuesday night, even as the Trump administration is building an immigration fraud case aimed at stripping her of citizenship and kicking her out of the country.

Omar was elected to a fifth House term over veteran state trooper John Nagel, leading 76.5% to 16% with nearly all the ballots in.

Nagel had defeated three other candidates in the August Republican primary and vowed to partner with law enforcement in cracking down on benefit fraud schemes in the district that have made national headlines.

The fraud scandal touched Omar, with one of her ex-campaign staffers, Guhaad Hashi Said, among the defendants who pleaded guilty to laundering dollars from taxpayer programs meant to feed needy kids.

“I think the people of Minnesota have been lied to. They’ve had their money stolen. They want to see somebody that’s going to come in and fix things,” Nagel told Fox News following his primary win. “They’re tired of being told the same old things.”

While her re-election was a near-certainty, Omar has been battling accusations that she misrepresented facts about her family’s immigration history to obtain citizenship for herself — and for a man she married in 2009 suspected of being her brother.

Since 2016, the FBI and Department of Homeland Security have been looking into allegations that Omar legally wed one of her siblings to try to get him a marriage-based green card. The congresswoman has repeatedly denied the claim, calling it a racist conspiracy theory.

While married to her possible relative, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, Omar filed joint tax returns for 2014 and 2015 with a man, Ahmed Hirsi, with whom she entered an Islamic marriage in 2002, but later claimed to have separated from in 2011.

Other social media posts, marriage records and statements by Omar and Elmi have further complicated their relationship — including Instagram and Facebook photos first reported by the conservative blog Powerline a decade ago that apparently show the pair with their other siblings.

In a recent DC court filing, federal prosecutors referred to Omar as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi,” which sources told The Post is the congresswoman’s “real” name.

Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents executed a search warrant on Omar’s Washington, DC, bungalow on Oct. 12, taking the rare step of letting a covert probe into a political figure become public fewer than 30 days before her election.

“I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement,” Omar responded to the raid on X. “For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation.”

“I will not be silenced,” the congresswoman added.

Sources said that the investigation — led by the Minnesota US Attorney’s Office — is focused on allegations of green-card fraud as well as claims that either Omar’s father, Nur Omar Mohamed, or Omar herself lied about her birthdate to attain citizenship in 2000.

If Omar lied on immigration paperwork about her birthdate at any point in the past decade, Omar could face prosecution and, ultimately, deportation.

The feds’ probe has also broadened to also look into allegations that Omar lied on House financial disclosures after she and her political consultant husband, Tim Mynett, downgraded their net worth from tens of millions of dollars to just six figures between 2024 and 2025.
