Prince William Gives Update on Kate Middleton’s Cancer Recovery: ‘Family Couldn’t Cope Without Her’

Prince William is grateful for his wife Princess Kate Middleton’s continued recovery after her cancer battle.

“She’s an amazing mum, an amazing wife and, literally, our family couldn’t cope without her,” William, 43, said on the Friday, May 22, broadcast of the U.K.’s Heart Radio. “She’s been absolutely stunning, brilliant.”

Kate, 44, was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer in 2024. After taking a step back from her royal duties, the Princess of Wales underwent a preventative form of chemotherapy as treatment. Kate announced last year that she was in remission.

“I wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you to The Royal Marsden for looking after me so well during the past year,” Kate wrote in a January 2025 statement. “My heartfelt thanks goes to all those who have quietly walked alongside William and me as we have navigated everything.”

She continued, “We couldn’t have asked for more. The care and advice we have received throughout my time as a patient has been exceptional. It is a relief to now be in remission and I remain focused on recovery … As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal. I am, however, looking forward to a fulfilling year ahead.”

Kate has steadily been returning to her regal duties, including embarking on her first overseas trip to Reggio Emilia, Italy, earlier this month.

“[I am] so proud,” William gushed on Friday morning. “She’s been amazing. She’s been through so much in the last couple of years, particularly. And yeah, she’d been looking forward to the Italian trip a lot. I’m really glad it went really well.”

According to William, Kate “wanted to go and do lots of research” on her Italian state visit.

“She spends, God knows how much time now, looking through all the paperwork. She’s a proper pro on early years,” William said of his wife’s patronage. “Most evenings I’m fighting to get past in the bedroom, what paperwork that she’s got lined up, ready to read. I’m so pleased it went well for her, and yeah, I think she came back buzzing.”

William and Kate have been married since 2011, during which time they welcomed kids Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, 7, who had also dealt with their mom’s health scare.

“Everyone has their own coping mechanisms for these sorts of things, and children are constantly learning and adapting,” William told Eugene Levy on an October 2025 episode of the actor’s The Reluctant Traveler series. “We try to make sure we give them the security and the safety that they need. We’re a very open family, so we talk about things that bother us, and things that trouble us, but you never quite know the knock-on effects that it can have. It’s just important to be there for each other and to kind of reassure the children that everything is OK.”
