NFL star Calais Campbell’s family feared for mom’s safety in frantic 911 call released after her grisly murder

A frantic 911 call captured Calais Campbell’s siblings asking for a welfare check on their mother because they couldn’t get hold of her after the NFL star’s schizophrenic brother allegedly killed her inside her Atlanta home Tuesday.

The caller, only identified as “Mr. Campbell,” called for police to be sent to the Buckhead townhome June 30 after neighbors spotted 41-year-old Ciarre Campbell driving a car owned by his 71-year-old mother, Nateal Campbell, according to audio shared by the Atlanta Police.

Nateal Campbell was found unresponsive inside her home, as her son was accused of cutting her neck with a knife, according to an arrest warrant viewed by WSB-TV.

Ciarre Campbell, who is two years older than Calais Campbell, was said to have been diagnosed with multiple mental illnesses.

“It was kind of a wellness check, my brother, he’s mentally ill, he’s been diagnosed with schizophrenia and some other things. He stays with my mother, And this morning we’re trying to get in” the caller told a dispatcher.

“This morning he drove her car, which is very unusual. She never let … he doesn’t drive at all, but the neighbor caught it on camera that he drove off in her car and we can’t get in her house,” he added.

The caller, who had been locked out of the home, said Ciarre Campbell told them their mother wasn’t in the house despite witnesses disputing the claim.

“I just tried to jump the window, and he’s in there, and he said she left, but the camera footage that my neighbor has shows she never left. So we’re just trying to get in there,” the caller said.

The 911 caller described his mother as “fairly older” but didn’t have any specific medical, physical or mental health issues before the call.

The caller’s sister and brother-in-law could be heard frantically asking questions in the background throughout the three-and-a-half-minute audio.

“I’m on the phone with 911 right now,” the caller told his sister.

The dispatcher informed the siblings they should stay outside the home and not try to enter until police arrived.

“We just want to get inside, we don’t know she could be in the house,” he said.

Ciarre Campbell, who was said to have barricaded himself inside, was detained when police entered.

Officers entered the home and detained Ciarre Campbell, before discovering his mother inside, unresponsive.

Nateal Campbell was pronounced at the scene.

The alleged killer was arrested and charged with Felony Murder, Murder, Aggravated Assault, and Possession of a Knife During the Commission of a Felony, police said.

Officers had been called to the Buckhead district home 10 times over the last nine months before Tuesday due to instances with Ciarre Campbell, according to police.

Three calls, between September and November 2025, were for a “demented person,” according to officials.

Two separate instances were noted at the home on April 12, including a fight in progress and a suspicious person.

The second incident, a neighbor claimed Campbell had turned off the power to his home before a second neighbor claimed the man had been standing on her air conditioning unit.

Earlier that day, Nateal Campbell reported that her son had been burning items inside her garage because he hadn’t taken his medicine for schizophrenia.

Police responded to the home for two separate calls on April 12: a fight in progress and a suspicious person.

Twelve days later, Ciarre Campbell allegedly started another fire to “rid the house of the demons,” according to a police report viewed by The Post.

Nateal Campbell hadn’t been staying at the home for a week at the time after her son had “overtaken the home,” her daughter told police.

On May 26, police responded to a “dispute call” from a neighbor claiming Ciarre Campbell was “acting crazy and putting stuff in her trash and yelling at her.”

Police were allegedly shown video from inside the Campbell household where several pictures were plastered on the walls “with killing someone on it.”

“I asked her if she talked to the mother Nateal Campbell about her son and she stated the mother said her son is a good kid,” the police report stated.

Ciarre Campbell is being held at Fulton County Jail after he was booked early Wednesday morning for his mother’s murder.
