Muslim nonprofit fundraiser that raked in $265K from taxpayers features trinkets promoting Hamas, other terror groups

News RoomBy News RoomJanuary 24, 20261 ViewsNo Comments

This is some radical swag.

A Muslim nonprofit that’s raked in over $260,000 in taxpayer dough and has ties to Mayor Zohran Mamdani hosted a pop-up fundraiser featuring a twisted array of trinkets promoting Hamas and other US-designated terror groups.

During the Muslim American Society’s Jan. 18 support-Sudan event at its Brooklyn youth center, vendors peddled key chains, stickers, pins and other tchotchkes in support of Hamas, Hezbollah and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

Other items at the event, called Thrift4Sudan, featured reverential images of late terrorist leaders Hassan Nasrallah of Hezbollah and Yahya Sinwar of Hamas, and a masked figure resembling the late Hamas spokesman Abu Obeida.

Other merchandise sported terror-group logos or directly called for the destruction of Israel, with slogans like “Let’s go bomb Tel Aviv” and “Death to the IDF,” The Times of Israel reported.

The outlet relied on a since-removed video of the event briefly posted on Instagram by Palestinian Assembly for Liberation PAL-Awda — the same anti-Israel mob that chanted “We support Hamas!” outside a Queens synagogue earlier this month.

The DC-based Muslim American Society’s New York chapter reported $982,123 in net assets for 2024, according to its latest available tax filings

Since fiscal year 2023, the City Council has awarded $265,000 in “discretionary funds” to the nonprofit’s New York chapter — mostly through its Brooklyn and Staten island operation — for boosting youth programs, “victim services” and other community initiatives, a Post review of city records found.

Of the taxpayer-funded pork, $150,000 – more than half – was dished out through ex-Speaker Adrienne Adams, while fellow Dem and ex-Brooklyn Councilman Justin Brannan approved another $80,000.

Adams didn’t return messages, and Brannan declined comment.

Others doling out funds included ex-Councilmembers Kristy Marmorato (R-Bronx) and Ari Kagan (R-Brooklyn), who gave $20,000 and $5,000, respectively; and Alexa Aviles (D-Brooklyn), who gave $10,000.

MAS’ New York leadership includes notorious pro-Hamas activist Abdullah Akl, who grew up attending its Brooklyn youth center on Bath Avenue and is also an organizer for the radical, anti-Israel group Within Our Lifetime.

MAS’ influence over city politics morphed following the November election of socialist Mamdani as NYC’s first Muslim mayor. MAS-NY’s executive director Sherif Ahmed, and Hannah Towfeik, political director at MAS’ youth center, are part of Mamdani’s transition team currently helping fill key City Hall posts.

Julie Menin, who earlier this month became the Council’s first Jewish speaker, was stunned when contacted by The Post about the terrorist swag.

Menin will block payment of $80,000 in funds previously awarded to the MAS for this fiscal year pending an investigation by city lawyers — and potentially prohibit future Council funding for the nonprofit, said her spokesman Jonathan Szott.

“The City Council has zero tolerance for violations of our standards,” Szott said. “Funding to this organization is being paused pending a comprehensive internal review. Any nonprofit found to be supporting organizations that threaten the United States government is unacceptable and incompatible with City Council funding.”

Messages left with the MAS, its youth center and Mayor Mamdani’s office were not immediately returned.

Councilwoman and staunch Zionist Inna Vernikov (R-Brooklyn) called on Menin to tighten up the vetting process for all groups receiving Council funding.

“It’s no surprise that the radicals in City Hall are abusing taxpayer dollars to spread Hamas propaganda,” she said.

“These funds must be returned to the City of New York, and any organization who engages in aiding and abetting terrorists must be investigated, stripped of funding and criminally prosecuted.”
