Miranda Kerr’s ‘extreme biohacking diet’ is ‘very restrictive,’ experts warn: what she will and won’t eat

Want to eat like a supermodel? We hope you don’t like bread.

Or eggs. Or sushi. Or even kale, for that matter.

Miranda Kerr, 43, recently broke down the details of her diet on Kristin Cavallari’s podcast, “Let’s Be Honest,” and social media users were… stunned, to say the least.

“That diet sounds miserable,” wrote one TikTok user. “I am depressed listening to her,” said another.

“She’s a billionaire, she can eat whatever wacky food items she wants, but it is absolutely ridiculous and not sustainable for the average person,” argued a third.

It’s not just keyboard warriors with something to say: Several nutritionist and dietitians have chimed in as well

“This is, in fact, not super healthy,” said Jess Baker, who has an MS in nutritional science. “She’s probably just tired all the time. She’s probably in a s—ty mood… she’s probably not s—ting regularly enough. She probably poops once every few days.”

Ultimately, Miranda’s eating habits are just quite limited, according to dietitian Sophia Deahl — and they’re not for everyone.

“Miranda genuinely seems to care about eating for her health … but her diet is very restrictive,” Deahl told The Post. While she cautions against using Kerr’s diet as a “universal prescription,” she says there are some things we can take from Kerr’s diet that would help improve most people’s routines.

Miranda Kerr’s restrictive diet

What she eats:

  • Noni juice
  • Marshmallow tea
  • A few tablespoons of coconut yogurt, with local honey
  • Banana (just a little) and mangoes
  • “Mold-free, lead free” coffee with Erewhon coconut milk and maple syrup
  • Squash, carrots and parsnips (for carbs)
  • Caviar
  • Venison, bison, lamb and turkey
  • Salmon (but only a little due to mercury concerns)
  • Carob as a chocolate substitute
  • Lemon balm tea
  • Olive oil (but only on salads and never for cooking — for cooking, she uses coconut oil and avocado oil)
  • Coconut oil, avocado oil, and tallow, on occassion

What she won’t eat:

  • Eggs
  • Dairy
  • Wheat
  • Seed oils (e.g. canola oil, soybean oil and sunflower oil)
  • Bread (though she allows her kids to eat sourdough)
  • Rice
  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Sushi (over concerns about parasites)
  • Mass-produced meat

The realities of restriction

Deahl’s biggest concern about Kerr’s diet is the amount of food she limits or eliminates. Even Cavallari’s team called the diet “extreme biohacking.”

“For most people, these foods don’t need to be completely eliminated,” Deahl said. In fact, so much restriction could leave critical gaps in nutrition.

By not eating bread, dairy, wheat, eggs and seed oils, you might not get enough protein, fiber, calcium, iron, B vitamins and omega-3s — and your overall energy could be lacking.

Plus, there’s the issue of sustainability. “The more foods that are ‘off-limits,’ the harder it can become to eat flexibly in real life — at restaurants, while traveling, at social events, or simply when you’re craving something different,” Deahl said.

This could develop into anxiety around food and an “an increasingly rigid relationship with eating.”

Dr. Idrees Mughal, a lifestyle medicine doctor, went to far as to call the eating plan “disordered,” though he said he couldn’t diagnose based off a video clip.

“This is exactly why celebrities and models should not be your source of nutrition advice,” he said on TikTok. “A healthy diet is not defined by how many foods you eliminate, how exotic your meat is or whatever wellness trend you happen to be doing.”

Deahl emphasizes that she believes we should have as little restriction as possible for a healthy diet, but restricting food is highly individual and should be left to each person and their doctors.

That’s why, for the average client around Kerr’s age Deahl “wouldn’t recommend” this exact diet.

“For a woman in her 40s, I’d want to see a diet that provides adequate protein, fiber, healthy fats, complex carbohydrates and a wide range of nutrients,” she said. “This becomes especially important during the perimenopausal years, when maintaining muscle mass, bone health, metabolic health, and overall energy becomes increasingly important.”

Rather than restricting whole categories of food, Deahl says to consult a dietitian first to identify any sensitivities or foods causing inflammation.

What to take from Miranda Kerr’s diet

Despite the collective social media reaction, Deahl says there are a few “positive foundations” here — namely, lots of whole foods and a variety of protein, vegetables and antioxidant-rich foods.

Plus, she says it’s good that Kerr “eats before having her coffee, which can be helpful for energy, appetite, and blood sugar for many people.”

Deahl’s biggest takeaway is that you can get the same anti-inflammatory benefits of a diet like this without all the restrictions.

“I’d recommend eating plenty of whole foods, vegetables, fruit, nuts and seeds, quality proteins, seafood and minimally processed foods,” she said. “But I would not automatically recommend eliminating wheat, dairy, eggs, carbohydrates or other food groups unless there is an individual reason to do so.”

Don’t play copycat

Just because we get a glimpse of her day-to-day meals, Deahl points out we’re not seeing their medical history, labs, genetics, medications or other factors that influence a diet.

She also says we shouldn’t look at someone’s appearance and assume their diet is what makes them look that way.

“Take inspiration from the principles, not the prescription,” she recommends. “Whole, minimally processed foods and plenty of plants? Absolutely. Assuming you need to eliminate the same foods as a 43-year-old celebrity because it works for her? That’s where I’d be much more cautious.”

Instead of avoiding most carbs, for example, Deahl says to choose whole-food sources, like oats, potatoes, beans, whole grains, and fruit to get fiber, vitamins, minerals, and other beneficial compounds.

Also, don’t worry too much about salmon, even if you eat it multiple times a week, Deahl says. “Salmon is one of the lower-mercury fish and is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are important for brain, cardiovascular, and cellular health.”
