Melissa Rivers’ Met Gala 2026 Worst Dressed: Katy Perry’s ‘Heat Shield,’ Sam Smith’s ‘Grim Geisha’ and More (Exclusive)

News RoomBy News RoomMay 5, 20262 ViewsNo Comments

Melissa Rivers is serving her annual dose of fashion truth, calling out the most baffling looks from the 2026 Met Gala.

With wit sharper than a stiletto heel, the former Fashion Police star exclusively tells Us Weekly which celebrities made her worst dressed list during the star-studded red carpet event held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on Monday, May 4.

One wild style experiment that didn’t quite land for Rivers, 58, was Janelle Monáe in custom couture by Christian Siriano, a piece that featured live moss and electrical wires. She tells Us, “It looked like arts and crafts. And it’s supposed to be nature taking over art … it’s supposed to be a whole thing that is so far above my pay grade to understand.”

Another eye-catching look that missed the mark for Rivers was Sam Smith. Smith, who goes by they/them pronouns, and their partner, designer Christian Cowan, wore custom designed looks by Cowan, 30, for the event.

The “To Be Free” singer, 33, was “like the Grim Geisha,” Rivers quips, “like the Geisha of Death coming at you.”

Smith added extra drama to their ensemble adorned with over 230,000 crystals and beads by wearing a massive fascinator created by Cowan and Stephen Jones.

Rivers says that Heidi Klum’s outfit, albeit in theme with the over-the-top vibe of the Met Gala, was a look she could “reuse” for her Halloween party this year. Klum, 52, joined forces with her long-time Halloween makeup artist Mike Marino for the sculpturesque design that made her appear like a real-life statue.

Rivers tells Us there was another style dud, adding, “I did not like Lena Dunham’s dress.”

Dunham, 39, wore a custom red Valentino gown covered in sequins and feathers with a giant boa train. “It just didn’t work for me, and she’s such on a professional high right now,” Rivers shares with Us. “I was just like, ‘No, no, please, no.’”

She adds, “And honestly, and I run into this all the time because I’m short, you had to be tall in that dress.”

As for Katy Perry’s white off-the-shoulder Stella McCartney gown and silver mirrored mask, Rivers says it was out-of-this-world — and not in a good way.

She quips, “The back of the train looked like it was burnt and she had been on the Blue Origin trip, so I’m glad to know the heat shields worked.”

Luckily for fashion-loving fans, Rivers will be breaking down more Met Gala looks on an upcoming episode of her “Melissa Rivers Group Text” podcast.
