Jordan Simpson was trying to focus on his music rehearsal, but his phone wouldn’t stop buzzing.
He said he couldn’t play instruments with the noises, and chucked his phone on the ground.
But once he checked his phone, it was a flood of follows, retweets and likes after his video recreating the Mets’ SNY theme song went viral on social media.
“I’m like, ‘Oh wait,’ my video is doing that?” Simpson said. “I’m like, ‘Oh shoot, OK, then that’s something.’ So that was pretty cool.”
The video — which featured Simpson, 27, drumming and playing instruments to SNY’s years-long pregame theme song — aired on the network before the Mets’ 2023 season opener.
But it more importantly established Simpson as a prominent baseball content creator — he’s amassed tens of thousands of social media followers by blending his passions for the Mets and music to produce Mets-related songs for fans recapping every series.
“I tend to always conceptually combine baseball and music together,” Simpson said. “There are a lot of parallels in different ways, but I think in terms of combining music with the Mets, it kind of just became a thing where I didn’t think too deeply about it, but obviously those are my two passions.”
Simpson was constantly around music growing up.
He began playing drums at just 1 ½ years old before doing nearly every ensemble in middle and high school.
With his sister Devin, Simpson also often attended his father’s wedding band rehearsals, where they’d take notes of what sounded right and wrong and offer their opinion on certain performances.
Devin said she and her brother grew up listening to artists like Earth, Wind and Fire, Journey, and Stevie Nicks.
“We had a full library in the Simpson house, and we’d have family jam sessions sometimes,” Devin said. “Jordan and I, when we were kids, we’d reenact the live concerts, DVDs that we had and put on a show for our parents.
Simpson started playing baseball in 2006 and became a Mets fan by turning on the TV and seeing their games on.
He also attended games — notably Johan Santana’s no-hitter in 2012, the first in Mets history.
“As much as I wanted to get into the space, the first video that I did wasn’t so much with that intention,” Simpson said. “It was just more so, I’m a musician who likes the Mets, I’m gonna try this video and just post it and not think much of it, and then that took off.”
Now, after every Mets series, Simpson chooses an artist from the city of the team the Mets played against.
When the Mets played the Blue Jays in late June-early July, Simpson performed a Mets-themed song with inspiration from The Weeknd, a Toronto-based singer.
When the Mets played the Red Sox July 10-12, Simpson wrote a song inspired by the Boston-based band Bell Biv Devoe.
Simpson’s Subway Series song recaps have come from artists like Billy Joel and a band called Lawrence, the latter of which he used for a May 2025 recap.
“They’re a band from New York, and they’re some Mets fans as well,” Simpson said of Lawrence. “And through me doing the content, we developed a great friendship. I did one of their songs, and last year I did one of their songs with their lead singer, which is a lot of fun.”
Simpson said a decent amount of preparation comes with producing the songs due to the variables that come into play.
Before picking a song, Simpson said he thinks about the length of a series to determine what would be conducive to three or four games, along with how he’d arrange the given song prior to learning it.
The 27-year-old said songs take him a couple hours to produce on the short end but can take up to six or seven hours at most.
Simpson was at the Mets’ thrilling Game 4 win over the Phillies in the 2024 NLDS, and didn’t prepare anything for a recap song since he didn’t want to jinx anything.
After Francisco Lindor’s grand slam won the game, Simpson chose Lindor’s walk-up song, “My Girl,” as the tune for his recap.
Simpson didn’t get home until past midnight, but his TikTok still had 6,292 likes and 72,500 views.
“Those are ones where you’re riding the high of being at the ballpark when it happens, and then coming home, and I’m like, ‘Oh shoot, I have to write a song about this,’ and I’m staying up until 4 a.m.,” Simpson said.

With Simpson currently attending Liberty University for graduate school, balancing time for schoolwork and recaps is difficult, he says.
“Even if he has to be up until 4 o’clock in the morning to make sure he can post it first thing in the morning,” Devin said. “He does whatever it takes. You can be in the car and he’s listening to songs to figure out what song he’s going to be doing for the next recap.”
Though he doesn’t think about the recognition often, Simpson said several fans have bumped into him at Mets games.
“There’s nothing like the feeling of somebody coming to you and saying, ‘I appreciate what you do, and thank you for that,’ ” Simpson said. “I could be at a concert and somebody says, ‘Oh, you’re the Mets guy.’ ”
So, it turns out the rehearsal notifications were something more than just breaking news — it was the start of a career.
Matthew Baluyot, a close friend of Simpson, said miserable sports radio personalities get significant attention, and that Simpson separates himself by creating content with a positive mindset.
Baluyot said even during the Mets’ awful season — they sit last in the NL East — Simpson’s music gives him a pulse and updates on what’s happening with the team.
“I think at his core, Jordan Simpson embodies the ‘Ya Gotta Believe’ motto in the new age,” Baluyot said. “When things are going tough, he’s still making this content.”
