Marine Johannes questionable after exiting early in another Liberty injury concern

News RoomBy News RoomJuly 20, 20261 ViewsNo Comments

INDIANAPOLIS — The Liberty may be without yet another key rotational player for Monday’s game against the Dallas Wings because of injury.

Marine Johannes is listed as questionable for the Liberty’s postponed game.

Johannes appeared to tweak her ankle in Saturday’s loss in Indiana.

She exited the game with 8:42 left in the fourth and never returned.

Coach Chris DeMarco didn’t have an immediate update on Johannes after the game.

The Liberty are already playing without Leonie Fiebich and Satou Sabally.

Fiebich didn’t make this road trip as she’s dealing with a left foot injury that has sidelined her since July 3.

Meanwhile, Sabally hasn’t played since June 23 as she remains in concussion protocol.

DeMarco hasn’t unveiled an official return-to-play timeline for either, though he said Sabally won’t return before the All-Star break.

The Liberty arrived in Dallas for Monday’s game a few days behind schedule.

New York was supposed to play the Wings on Thursday but the Liberty’s travel issues resulted in a postponement.

The Wings enter Monday on a team-best six-game winning streak after beating the Sparks on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Liberty, losers of four straight, are reeling.

Saturday’s 20-point loss to the Fever was the latest in a series of gut punches. The Liberty have now lost eight of their past 10 games. They haven’t had a stretch this bad since 2022 before Breanna Stewart came into their lives.

In a season that has championship-or-bust expectations, the Liberty sit only a half-game above the eighth and final playoff spot and 2 ½ games from missing the postseason completely.

“I’m not gonna say play like the seed that we are but kind of, you know what I mean? Have some kind of chip on our shoulder or fight behind us,” Stewart said. “We don’t like where we’re at right now but we’re f–king there, you know what I mean? And playing with that and realizing that we’re in it, we’re in the trenches and we can either keep sinking or we can dig ourselves out and that’s something like as an organization we all have to do and this group, we continue to show up every day, for sure, because we have vets, we have pros in here and these losses are not going to rattle us, but at the same time, we need to be better.”
