Mandy Patinkin, Michael Douglas, Annette Bening and more of Rob Reiner’s closest friends and collaborators gathered to remember the life and career of the film icon one week after his murder.
The emotional tributes were featured in CBS News: Rob Reiner — Scenes From a Life, which aired on Sunday, December 21, looking back on Rob’s biggest films and proudest moments.
“There was something about Rob, about his humanity, about his heart, about his humor that made you want to give your very best,” Kathy Bates said during the episode, choking back tears.
Rob and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead in their Brentwood, California, home on Sunday, December 14. Their official cause of death was “multiple sharp force injuries” and their deaths were ruled a homicide. Their son Nick Reiner was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder and is facing life in prison without parole or the death penalty if convicted. His arraignment was set for January 7, 2026.

Mandy Patinkin Cries Remembering Rob Reiner’s Friendship and ‘The Princess Bride’
Mandy Patinkin starred in 1987’s The Princess Bride, which Rob directed and coproduced. Nearly 40 years later, Patinkin still considers it one of the biggest roles that shaped his career.
“If I had to convince somebody to watch The Princess Bride, I would say exactly what Rob said to me when I questioned him,” Patinkin said, recalling Rob telling him, “‘It’s very simple: Grandpa comes over to his sick grandson to read him a story that says the most important thing in life is true love.’”
Patinkin broke down in tears remembering when the cast was invited out to L.A. to see the first rough cut of the film.
“We’re sitting there in this screening room, and the film was over, and I said, ‘I never dreamed I would get to be in something like this.’ I didn’t even have time to dream, and he made that dream for me.”
Patinkin shared that anywhere he goes, people ask him to utter the iconic lines his character Inigo Montoya said in the film, proving just how impactful Rob’s movie really was.
When Patinkin first heard about Rob and Michele’s murders, the only word that came to his head was “Inconceivable,” something the character Vizzini uttered throughout the film.
“I heard this news at about 11-something on Sunday night. I was in bed. I was in shock. I didn’t sleep at all. I just kept wailing and crying. I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know how to process it. I still don’t know how to process it and I’m not looking for how to process it,” Patinkin recalled.
“Rob worked hard to try to get me to be the best human being I could be,” he added through tears. “One time he said to me, ‘I just wish you could get out of your own way,’ and I haven’t been able to achieve that to this day, but I won’t quit trying. He cared about my nature. He showed it to me over and over again.”
Patinkin believes that even though Rob and Michele are gone, their spirits will live on.
“I believe that we can connect with Rob and Michele, and every time we’re thinking about this or talking about it or anyone tells a story, he’s here. He will not be forgotten.”
Jerry O’Connell Breaks Down Recalling ‘Stand by Me’ Moment
Jerry O’Connell cried while crediting Rob for giving him his big break as part of the ensemble cast in 1986’s Stand by Me.
“Rob Reiner, he is the best director ever. Period. Who has done so many different genres … he did it all,” O’Connell said. “Everything I have in my life is because I was in Stand By Me. Everything.”
O’Connell was 11 years old when he first met Rob at the audition for the film. He admitted he was very “nervous,” but Rob encouraged him to be himself, and it’s a mantra he’s stuck to ever since. O’Connell got choked up recalling a day when Rob spent time with him after the film’s release.
“Rob Reiner heard I was in L.A., and he took me out to lunch, man,” O’Connell said through tears. “He didn’t have to do that, you know what I’m saying? It was months after the movie came out. He was a busy man. And he took a 12-year-old me out to lunch just to be like, ‘Thanks so much, what a great movie.’ That lunch meant so much to me. It’s just stuff that kids need to hear.”
Albert Brooks Is Mourning His ‘Oldest Friend’
Albert Brooks had known Rob for 60 years. The two met in high school and collaborated on 2023’s Albert Brooks: Defending My Life.
“Rob was my oldest friend. It’s that simple. He’s the person that I’ve known the longest. I met him when I was 14 years old. So I’m still in that not believing it stage,” Brooks said of Rob’s death. “I know it happened, but you know, I’m driving around and all of a sudden — I actually two days ago, I called his number.”
Brooks also shed light on how much Rob’s relationship with Michele positively influenced his life.
“Rob is a relationship person,” Brooks said. “Once he locked in, it was lifelong, so Michele was lifelong.” Brooks called Rob and Michele “soulmates.”
“They knew they would be together forever,” he remarked. “They were together at the very end in the same way they were together in the beginning.”
At the end of the episode, Brooks broke down thinking of a world without Rob and Michele.
“I just wish there was no reason to do this,” he said. “That’s what I really wish.”
Kiefer Sutherland Shares a Memorable Story About Rob Reiner
Kiefer Sutherland first met Rob at a casting session for Stand by Me. He had been living in his car at the time. His life completely changed after the film, and they collaborated again on 1992’s A Few Good Men. He remembered Rob being thoroughly impressed with Jack Nicholson’s performance delivering his famous “You can’t handle the truth” line.
“No one said a word, and Rob went up to Jack Nicholson and whispered in his ear, ‘Do you want to do another one?’ And Jack Nicholson said, ‘Well, we’re here,’” Sutherland said. “So they did another one, and it was just as extraordinary.”
“They had planned to shoot the whole day, and Rob looked at everybody and said, ‘I couldn’t ask for anything more, so you guys all have the rest of the day off,’” Sutherland added.
Kathy Bates Credited Her Career to Rob Reiner
Bates starred in Rob’s film Misery, the 1990 thriller based on Stephen King’s 1987 novel of the same name. Bates went on to win the Academy Award for Best Actress for her work in the film.
“If I hadn’t done Misery, it would be like George Bailey going back and seeing what his life would have been like if he had never been there,” Bates said. “I’ve always wanted to be an actress and if it wasn’t for Rob, I don’t think I would have ever been able to make that dream come true in such a dramatic and incredible way.”
“Rob changed the course of my life, and if he hadn’t, I wouldn’t be sitting in front of you now,” she added.
Annette Bening Calls Rob Reiner a ‘Family Man’
Annette Bening, a close personal friend of Rob’s, starred in 1995’s The American President with Michael Douglas.
“On the set he had the kind of enthusiasm that is infectious,” Bening said of Rob, adding that he was a “family man.”
“The leader sets the tone,” she continued.
She remembered how Rob always made sure that the cast and crew had enough time to spend with their families outside of filming.
“He would insist that the day ended at a sane time, which in show business is kind of unusual,” Bening said. “But, he said, ‘No, we want everyone to be able to have dinner with their kids.’ He knew how to create a great atmosphere.”
Bening said Rob was “an enthusiast about life” and always “dove in.” She always admired his devotion to Michele, whom he married in 1989 and welcomed kids Jake, Nick and Romy. (Rob also adopted daughter Tracy during his first marriage to Penny Marshall, which lasted from 1971 to 1981.)
“He loved his kids and Michele,” Bening said. “They were very much companions to each other. And we all respected that about them and their relationship.”
Michael Douglas and Rob Reiner Connected Over Having Famous Fathers
Michael Douglas was a longtime friend of Rob’s and had fond memories from working together on The American President. But above all, Douglas bonded with Rob over having famous fathers and how they navigated show business careers of their own. (Michael is the son of late actor Kirk Douglas, while Rob was the son of late actor Carl Reiner.)
“Well, my experience watching him was that I could never be the man that my father was. He can do everything. I mean, he was Spartacus … Once you go into the same business, it stares you in the face,” Douglas said of growing up with his famous dad. “And in Rob’s case, are you as funny as your father? I think that also created his tenacity, his strength and that’s something that’s not really talked about enough with Rob about his endurance.”
Similarly, Brooks reflected on Rob creating his own legacy and stepping out of his dad’s shadow. “I think Rob said himself that it wasn’t till after Stand by Me where his father said, ‘OK, you’re the real thing; you got it, you might be better than I ever was.’”
Growing up in the spotlight wasn’t the only thing Michael and Rob bonded over. Michael explained that he and Rob connected over their families — including raising children who suffered from addiction.
“With this terrible tragedy we’re realizing how much pressure he was dealing with in his personal life with his son,” Michael said of his son Cameron Douglas and Rob’s son Nick’s past struggles. “I also had a son who had had drug issues. I’m happy to say he’s overcome them and living a prosperous life. We did talk a lot about that and what you can do as a parent, what you can’t do. Knowing with all of that going on behind the scenes, this was a man who always gave it his best.”
How Rob Reiner Used His Voice in Politics
Bening and Michael both reflected on Rob’s activism, his involvement in politics and causes that were important to him.
“He really got involved in things that mattered to him politically and tried to help and tried to make a difference in the way that he wanted to, whether it was childcare, same-sex marriage or any number of causes,” Bening said.
“You cannot underestimate how important his work and Michele’s because they worked together, she was a part of his backbone,” Michael added. “His efforts, both in the quality of his work and how he conducted himself as a person in trying to improve the world, was worth [it] and will always be remembered.”
