Malcolm Jamal-Warner’s Widow Has Limited ‘Emotional Capacity’ to Have Relationship With His Mom

News RoomBy News RoomJuly 22, 20262 ViewsNo Comments

Malcolm Jamal-Warner’s widow, Tenisha Warner, is addressing her relationship with her mother-in-law, Pamela Warner, amid their bombshell lawsuit.

“Right now, everybody — like, all of his family members and [those] who have lost him — they are grieving,” Tenisha told Gayle King in a teaser of her Thursday, July 23, CBS Mornings sit-down. “You know, it’s been the biggest loss for all of us.”

When asked whether she is close with Pamela, Tenisha coyly responded, “You know.”

Malcolm-Jamal died in July 2025 at age 54 after tragically drowning in Costa Rica. He is survived by his mother, wife Tenisha and the couple’s 9-year-old daughter.

“Right now, my daughter and I are just, like, in terms like [a unit],” Tenisha told King, 71. “Look, the emotional capacity that I have can be very limited sometimes, and so, I have to for myself decide what do I have to give right now in this moment.”

She continued, “Whatever I have to give, the first person to get that is my daughter, and then the second is myself.”

Tenisha’s interview with CBS Mornings was filmed shortly before she filed a $1.2 million lawsuit against Pamela, who is the successor trustee of Malcolm-Jamal’s Warner Family Trust. In court documents obtained by Us, Tenisha alleged that she is entitled to $1.2 million, which she claims is equivalent of what her late husband promised her as part of their premarital agreement.

Though Tenisha married Malcolm-Jamal in 2022, she alleged in her filing that the Cosby Show did not deliver on the terms before his death. Tenisha claimed that she is a creditor of his estate, which is reportedly unrepresented and “will be inadequate to satisfy” his apparent obligations. Tenisha is now asking the trust to settle Malcolm-Jamal’s alleged debt.

“Plaintiff performed all obligations required of her under the agreement, including entering into and remaining in the marriage until the decedent’s death,” the lawsuit reads. “The decedent died without having satisfied his obligations under the agreement, and no person or entity has paid or provided the sums due to plaintiff under the agreement.”

Tenisha filed her petition to block Pamela from distributing trust property while the dispute is litigated.

Pamela has not publicly addressed Tenisha’s lawsuit but remains committed to honoring Malcolm-Jamal’s memory.

“I was chosen and blessed to be the mother [of] a child who embodied brilliant, creative, intelligence, empathy, a love for his people, confidence and believe that we can all be ‘better us’s’ as Malcolm would say,” Pamela wrote in a Tuesday, July 21, statement. “He had a heart of gold. He was insightful and had a real good read of human nature. He was not just my son, but my go-to person, my confidant, my brother and sometimes had to parent me. He was my business partner for more than 40 years. We together built the name and the business.”

Pamela also hinted at her dynamic with Tenisha in the post, writing, “During my year-long [grief] journey, I have discovered how cruel, evil and greedy a human can be,” though she did not mention her daughter-in-law by name.
