Detroit scored what would have been a game-winning touchdown on the final play against the Steelers — and still found a way to lose and leave their playoff hopes in peril.
Jared Goff threw a fourth-down pass from the Steelers 8-yard line to Amon-Ra St. Brown with no time left, near the end zone.
Brown made the catch, but was stopped by defenders from breaking the plane.
As penalty flags flew, St. Brown lateraled the ball to Goff, who ran it in for what looked like a potential game-winning touchdown at Ford Field on Sunday.
Instead, the score was negated by an offensive pass interference call on St. Brown, who appeared to push off Jalen Ramsey to gain separation, and the Steelers held on for a 29-24 win.
The referees first announced a touchdown to Goff, which got cheers from the Lions fans as they appeared to believe their team had won.
The bad news was then broken to them as the game was over on the penalty.
The only reason the Lions had a chance to win the game was Steelers kicker Chris Boswell missed a 37-yard field goal with 2:09 left in the game.
Detroit’s loss knocked them out of the playoffs for now, clinching a postseason berth for the 49ers and Bears.
The Packers (9-5-1) hold the No. 6 seed in the NFC.
Detroit (8-7) still has a 16 percent chance to make the playoffs, per ESPN, but will need to win out and have Green Bay lose out.
