Laid-off Washington Post reporter lands gig at CNN

News RoomBy News RoomJuly 23, 20265 ViewsNo Comments

A veteran journo who was purged during the Washington Post’s shocking bloodbath earlier this year has landed on her feet, joining CNN as a national news reporter.

The left-leaning cable network announced its hire of Brittany Shammas on Thursday.

She’ll focus on national reporting for CNN’s digital audience while based in the outlet’s Washington, DC offices, CNN said.

According to the network, she will focus on “distinctive national reporting and storytelling that goes beyond the headlines, developing original angles and producing richly reported narratives, scene pieces and deep dives that help CNN’s digital audience better understand the people, places and forces shaping the news.”

“Brittany is an award-winning reporter with a proven ability to uncover stories others miss and tell them with depth, clarity and nuance,” CNN said.

“Whether covering breaking news, reporting from the field or pursuing accountability journalism, she brings curiosity, rigor and sharp storytelling instincts that will strengthen CNN’s coverage of the most significant domestic stories.”

Shammas joins CNN after seven years at The Washington Post, where she most recently served as a local enterprise reporter writing narrative and accountability stories rooted in the DC area.

She was among some 300 journos axed from WaPo in February as owner and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos sought to halt the paper’s financial losses.

“I’ve had a hard time finding the words to share this, but I was laid off yesterday by The Washington Post,” Shammas wrote Feb. 5 on X.

“I loved my time there, especially the last year, which I spent working for dream editor @byTheresaVargas on a new team dedicated to narrative and accountability stories,” she added.

Shammas previously covered national breaking news on the paper’s general assignment team, reporting on subjects ranging from natural disasters and mass shootings to the long-term effects of the pandemic.

Prior to joining WaPo in 2019, Shammas spent eight years reporting in Florida, covering education and public safety for the Naples Daily News and the South Florida Sun Sentinel before becoming a staff writer at Miami New Times.

Her investigative reporting at Miami New Times on deaths tied to a for-profit correctional healthcare company earned a Sigma Delta Chi Award.

Shammas is a West Michigan native and graduate of Michigan State University.
