Knicks won’t face longtime nemesis Trae Young in Wizards clash

News RoomBy News RoomMarch 22, 20260 ViewsNo Comments

An old MSG villain is being shut down before the Knicks game.

Trae Young, who played just five games with the Wizards since being acquired in a January trade from the Hawks, is suffering from a quad contusion and lower-back inflammation, the team announced Saturday.

“Further updates will be provided as appropriate,” the Wizards said.

Young won’t play Sunday at the Garden and is a good bet to be shut down for the season.

The Wizards are tanking for a better draft position and need to finish in the NBA’s bottom four to guarantee they don’t give up their top eight protected pick to the Knicks.

If the pick does not convey to the Knicks this season — and there’s a great chance it doesn’t because the Wizards are committed to the tank — it becomes two second-round picks for New York.

Young, who developed into an enemy at MSG after beating the Knicks in the 2021 playoffs, only played one game against New York this season, when he was still with the Hawks.

He produced just nine points in 31 minutes.

The Hawks have been much better this season since trading Young, riding an 11-game winning streak until falling Friday night to the Rockets.

The Wizards, meanwhile, are 0-5 when Young plays, and that will probably be their final record with him this season.

Mike Brown joined the 500-win club.

With Friday’s victory over the Nets, he became the 40th head coach to reach 500 career NBA wins.

He’s also one of just eight coaches with at least 500 wins and a winning percentage of 60 percent or better.

The others are Gregg Popovich, Jerry Sloan, Pat Riley, Phil Jackson, Red Auerbach, Steve Kerr and K.C. Jones.

Brown’s career record is 500-329 (.603). Before joining the Knicks this season (where his record is 46-25), Brown coached the Cavaliers, Lakers and Kings.

Landry Shamet, who suffered a knee injury in the third quarter Friday, has been ruled out for Sunday’s contest against the Wizards.

Shamet’s official injury designation is right knee soreness.

It’ll be his first DNP since returning from a dislocated shoulder in mid-January. Shamet has also been struggling lately while shooting just 26 percent on 3-pointers in the past 11 games.

Josh Hart is questionable with runner’s knee. He sat three of the past five games with the knee problem.
