Raiders quarterback Kirk Cousins had a funny response after throwing his 301st career touchdown pass in the Raiders’ Week 1 win on Sunday.
The 38-year-old quarterback, who threw three touchdowns in Las Vegas’ 27-13 home win over the Dolphins, knew he had passed Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway on the all-time list when he was talking with a person on the field after the game.
“Hell of an accomplishment,” the man said to Cousins after his record-breaking touchdown pass to Ashton Jeanty, who had caught another TD earlier in the game.
“Yeah, thank you, yeah. I just passed John Elway, I think,” Cousins said and after getting that confirmed from the man, added with a smile: “It’s a decent name. He had a decent career.”
Cousins, who became the 15th quarterback to throw at least 300 touchdown passes in his career, completed 21 of 30 passes but for just 160 yards with two interceptions.
Though it was a winning debut for Cousins and the Raiders, it still hasn’t slowed talk of No. 1 pick Fernando Mendoza taking over the reins sooner rather than later.
The California Post’s Vincent Bonsignore wrote that although the veteran threw the three touchdown passes and provided veteran leadership, he struggled with throws more than 10 yards downfield.
Cousins was just 1-for-7 for 21 yards in those situations, which could make it hard for the Raiders to win more games if that doesn’t change.
