DENVER — The Mets had multiple loud assassins on Sunday, with Juan Soto inflicting damage more subtly.
On a day Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil each blasted two homers, it was Soto on base that was easy to overlook in the 13-5 victory over the Rockies at Coors Field.
Soto reached base six times (three singles, three walks).
The Mets hadn’t had a player reach base six times in a game since Alonso on Aug. 15, 2019.
“Try to help the team in any way, even if I take a walk or hit the ball hard,” Soto said.
Soto owns a .244/.384/.436 slash line — good numbers, but still below his lofty standards.
Even so, he’s shown improvement in June by posting a 1.179 OPS in eight games.
Soto homered against the Dodgers on Tuesday, after hitting two the previous weekend against the Rockies at Citi Field.
“I am finally landing some pitches, making some good swings with good decisions, finding some holes,” Soto said.
Manager Carlos Mendoza noted the symmetry within Soto’s performance.
“Three singles and three walks — not easy to do at the big league level,” Mendoza said. “You get to the plate six times and find a way to get on base. It’s good to see him do that and finally getting results, but I feel the at-bat quality has been there throughout.”
Soto was on base in the third inning when Alonso homered and again in the eighth.
“You couldn’t ask for a more perfect day offensively,” Alonso said, when asked about Soto’s performance. “His commanding of the strike zone, him hitting the ball hard all over the yard, staying in the middle of the field just crushing liners, it was a perfect day for him. He’s been killing it. I feel like he’s going to continue to do so for sure.”
Soto watched as Alonso moved ahead of David Wright for second place on the all-time Mets home run list. Alonso’s two homers gave him 243.
Alonso blasted five homers during the seven-game road trip.
“He’s Pete,” Soto said. “He’s a great hitter.”
